Conservatives: Beware of this blog–
It’s a head fake.
jumping in pools
Jumping in Pools Blog is a website that specializes in writing realistic but fake stories, publishing them and then watching who will link to their bogus news story. The blog does not identify itself as a satire site and several of their satire pieces are so close to fact that it is hard to tell the difference. Don’t be fooled. Several conservatives have fallen for their pranks and Reuters even published one of their posts at least once. This is a dangerous website.

The latest conservatives to fall for one of their fake news stories were Rush Limbaugh and Michael Ledeen. On August 25 Jumping in Pools posted a fake article about Obama’s far left college thesis. Obama wrote his thesis on a nuke free world. He never released it during the campaign because it is reportedly filled with radical slurs against America. The state-run media never cared much about it. So in August Jumping in Pools posted one of their fake stories claiming they found this thesis.

Last week Rush’s team and Michael fell victim to the prank. Tonight the state-run media is getting a good laugh at Rush’s expense.

Occasionally I get emails from readers pointing me to this blog. It is obviously still fooling its readers. Please pay particular attention and remember the name of this horrid website. Don’t let yourself fall victim to their high school humor.

UPDATE: Matthew from BiP sent this:

Jim,

Yours is a site that I respect. Did you even bother visiting JiP before you cranked out your hit piece? Over 90% of our articles are non-satirical. And when they are satire, they are duly noted.

Matt

My Response-

Matthew- Obviously, your satire is not clearly marked or Michael and Rush would not have linked.

Jim

UPDATE 2: This comes from Tim K. at JiP–

Mr.Hoft,

I would invite you to visit this link, of all of the satire which is labeled as such at Jumping in Pools.

http://jumpinginpools.blogspot.com/search/label/satire

Just because Mr.Ledeen did not read the fine print, or Rush Limbaugh’s staff, does not mean it was not clearly stated.

As Mr.Ledeen wrote, “The hoax/satire was written in August, so it’s not connected to any current event. I cam across it on Twitter, read the blog, found it interesting, and posted on it. I failed to notice that one of the tags was “satire.””, perhaps if Mr.Ledeen did some investigative reporting or read the entire article, he would have seen it.

I have always respected your website, especially on Honduras, you are a valued part of the Conservative blogosphere, however, you are wrong to attack Jumping in Pools, a website which specializes on covering the daily happenings of the world. Let us not also forget, Mr.Ledeen found our article, we did not find his pen.

- Tim K., co-blogger at www.jumpinginpools.blogspot.com

UPDATE 3: From the email– The moderators at Free Republic banned JiP a few months ago for repeatedly posting their fake satire, they also spam other sites with it.

Last week Rush’s team fell victim to the prank. Tonight the state-run media is getting a good laugh at Rush’s expense.

Odd that the mainstream media would have the gall to laugh at anyone when it comes to Obama. They’re the people who used the term “wise” (vomit) when talking about this cheap, transparently fraudulent, corrupt, dishonest, horrendously incompetent machine politician from Chicago.

Talk about embarrassing yourself to the point of having to immediately commit suicide…

Weird that liberals get so excited that an entertainer fell for one hoax, when the entire world (except for a handful of us smart people) has fallen for the comprehensive hoax that is Obama.

It was interesting last night, Michael Ladeen apologized on his website to Joe Klein for falling for this site saying he didn’t see the tagline as “satire” (Rush got it from Ladeen)and Klein still sorta took a shot at Ladeen and Rush anyway…..Libs, they make me sick…

I think it has to do with the fact that this particular entertainer is a fat-assed blowhard with a monstrous ego who’s also had issues with drug addiction and pedophilia.

Liar. If Limbaugh were a pedophile he’d be off the air by now and you know it. You can’t compete in the realm of ideas, so you libel those whose positions are superior to yours. Typically dishonest, destructive, evil leftist bastard, aren’t you?

You come here with your pathetically contrived excitement over an ENTERTAINER’S flub, trying to distract us from the fact that the president and the Democrats are bombing, tanking, failing, crashing and burning, and setting themselves up for a spectacular, epic defeat in the next few elections…

Good. Keep it up. Your party’s failure fills me with glee. It couldn’t happen to nicer libelous sons of bitches. If it were up to me I’d ban your ass for spreading your lies.

Sorry, Limbaugh said, on air, that Joe Klein was trying to peddle this story in an upcoming TIME piece. But had NO SOURCE! Then, to juxtaposition this, Rush had an AUDIO, from way back in 1997. When Obama was an Illinois State Senator. And, he was complaining, then, that the WARREN COURT was remiss in NOT adding “redistribution of wealth” to the agenda of affirmative action.

So, there’s no college thesis released. The reason it’s not released? It’s probably something you’d laugh at if you read it, now.

But this Obama philosophical screech, where he bemoans American’s ‘loss of liberty’ because there was no REDISTRIBUTION OF WEATH CLAUSE. That’s no lie. I heard the tape Rush played.

That Joe Klein would like to trap Rush? Sure. There’s nothing wrong with Rush telling his audience what was proportedly written by “MR. ANNONYMOUS.” Because Joe Klein wrote the book on Bill Clinton having an illegitimate Black child. Sure. he screwed enough. But Bill Clinton was left sterile. He had the mumps when he was nine years old.

I looked this over when Michael Ledeen posted it. I noticed that the Jumping in Pools post had no reference or links — I couldn’t understand how it could be a legitimate story. I also searched for any references to same and didn’t find anything. I also noted how he had a quote for the title — “Constitution is Inherently Flawed” — when no such statement existed in the text. That was bizarre, too.

Still, I would really like to see any college thesis at all from Obama. Liberals love to pride themselves on their intelligence — why the fear of the university work?

The Post was all over McDonnell’s thesis. (As if it did them or Deeds any good).

    wanumbaNo Gravatar
    October 24th, 2009 | 10:46 pm | #22

Rush got the heads up practically as he read the article and announced it during his show. The supposed thesis has statements built off Obama’s public speaking about the COnstitution and redistribution of wealth, so what was reported actually is based in some truth.
Rush made the comment that if one applies the same rules as were suddenly concoted for him , ie that “so what if it’s fake everyone knows it could be true” sort of the “Dan Rather” disclaimer,
then we all know Obama believes this stuff, the veracity of the actual source is irrelevent. But that presumes of cours that the Left actually CARES about Truth, not POWER.
THe audio is available to verify Obama has indeed complained that redistribution is something he wants and hasn’t been addressed under out system of governance in a manner which he wants to see implemented.
Two devaluated cents: Obama has no Columbia thesis at all. Obama doesn’t seem to be one who would write a thesis if there was some way to get out of the requirement. Or if there IS one, Bill Ayers wrote that, too.

The Post was all over McDonnell’s thesis. (As if it did them or Deeds any good).

Indeed. And the media basically made dozens of reporters residents of Alaska in order to look into Sarah Palin’s background. How come they didn’t do that for Obama? Could it be that they knew he couldn’t pass any level of scrutiny whatsoever? Talk about having no faith at all in the guy you support.

What a pitiful joke of a man our president is. No accomplishments, no original thoughts, no ability to extemporize, and no ability to withstand criticism. And a chronic liar, like his supporters here. I wish I had a time machine to fast forward to the night of the 2010 elections. I’m so looking forward to firing these monstrosities that I can barely sit still for the next year.

Not really fair to call the site a fake. They do have straight up, non-satirical posts if you will bother to read.

The posts that are satire are tagged as “satire”, as was the Obama thesis post and if you look at their page you will see a category specifically for satire.

Way to smear an entire blog because some people didn’t bother to notice they were reading something marked as satire before jumping all over it.

Why don’t you blame those who made the mistake instead of taking out your defense for Rush on the blogger.

I’m seriously disappointed in this post, Jim, and my respect for Gateway Pundit, which I have read for a very long time, has just dropped to the bottom of the barrel.

Classic indeed but not classy. Real men fight for their country, they just don’t stand by and look at the destruction taking place and especially if it is done by a Usurper who has no constitution rights to rule or govern you. They don’t wait 4 years.

Usurper obama has friends like Chavez, Castro, Zelata, etc… all dictators who changed or tried to changed the limits terms of the presidency of their country… and you think that this is not Obama’s goal? It is.

Zelata didn’t succeed because Hondurans kicked him out. Obama will succeed because NO ONE wants to kick Obama out… that is not “politically correct”, right?

Imagine, Hondurans kicked out Zelata because he TRIED to trample their Constitution. Obama DID trample your Contitution and he is still in Office… and will be there for a very very long time… unless you wake up.

Not “indoctrinating” anyone. I’m expressing my opinion, like you are. I’m just much more persuasive than you. I can actually explain things instead of simply repeating catch phrases, insults, and slogans over and over. I respond to others’ points instead of just insisting that I’m right and everyone else is wrong.

That’s why you say you hate me. Because I’m simply better at explaining my positions, so people are more open to my way of thinking than they are to yours. You act like a madman, and then you’re shocked that people reject your ideas.

You are not more persuasive, you manage English better than me and you are surrender by people who don’t act, just react.

I speak to a wall here… the apathy and complacency are too huge. But then again, most of you have already mentionned that you were were gullible liberals before … so that probably explains why you will never act like a responsible conservative who cherish its Constitution. For liberals, Constitution doesn’t matter, for them it is an obsolete peace of paper. I know I’m wasting my time here. Anyone who cant see that Rush was using satire to make a point about the outrage on the left about the FAKE quotes they used to get him booted from the NFL owners club is clueless.

Rush set the media up again. They are running with this story the same way they did the lies and fake quotes that were made about race and attributed to Rush.

Rush wins this one hands down and it was simply brilliant on his part.

I read that post, and almost referenced it in one of my own – but didn’t, because the story had no links to original source whatsoever, and I couldn’t find anything independently.

And I find it ironic that Limbaugh was the first one to correct himself – on the very same show during which he first read it – to point out that the post was satire.

And, finally, Craig, your stalker-like obsession with Tom W. needs to stop. The man had his privacy violated, and now posts under various pseudonyms due to that violation. You are disrespecting and endangering him by failing to allow him to maintain his privacy. If this were my website, you would be banned for such action.

And as for your analogy of Zelaya and Obama: the Hondurans took action explicitly laid out in their law and constitution, in response to a clear and specific violation of their constitution. The decision for that action went all the way to their Supreme Court.

Whether correct or not, Obama’s legitimacy to serve as President was certified, and therefore he now has the presumption of innocence. That means that those who allege that he is not a natural-born citizen now bear the burden to prove their allegation.

In Zelaya’s case, he pushed for a referendum to change the constitution while serving as president, which the constitution explicitly prohibits. The Supreme Court ordered him removed from power, which their constitution explicitly states to do in such circumstance.

If you can’t grasp the difference, then perhaps you need a bit more indoctrination in the US Constitution and legal system.

    Holy Shi’ite Jim,

I got punked by this site. Sept. 23. They did a full-fledged interview with me on Pro-Defense Libertarians.

I just re-read it. I didn’t say anything that they could catch me on. So, with this new info, I’m surprised that they still chose to run the interview.

My gosh. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Yes. I wholeheartedly agree. Why does he feel the need to keep violating his privacy to make his point?

I suspect that Rush did not get punked. Haven’t followed it- possible I suppose.
From what I have followed in the whining by the left over Rush is that most of the “reporting” on Rush is fake and out of context.Apparently this item did not grow legs
and has little to do with anything as big as the White houses attempts to smear anything not pro leftist.

I am largely to blame for Rush falling for the satire as real. Rush was, at times, reading from my blog post at American Thinker and shows that as one of his sources on his website. His other source was Ledeen, which my post at AT linked him to, but not to Wading in Pools. No excuse, I didn’t adequately check past Ledeen’s site. Having said that, by the time Rush began speaking about it I had already began posting at AT that the story was not reliable. That was done less than an hour after the initial posting. Here’s the full story, and by current media standards, the corrections and apologies on this was fast:

Dont you all get it? Rush was NOT fooled.

Anyone who cant see that Rush was using satire to make a point about the outrage on the left about the FAKE quotes they used to get him booted from the NFL owners club is clueless. They used a Blog to discridit RUsh and he is just returning the favor. Read his actual remarks on his website about the story.

RUSH:”So we have to hold out the possibility that this is not accurate. However, I have had this happen to me recently. I have had quotes attributed to me that were made up, and when it was pointed out to the media that the quotes were made up, they said, “It doesn’t matter! We know Limbaugh thinks it anyway.” Sort of like Dan Rather said, “I don’t care if these documents are forged. I know that Bush did what he did at the National Guard. I don’t care if the documents are forged.” I don’t care if the Limbaugh quotes are made up. So, I can say, “I don’t care if these quotes are made up. I know Obama thinks it. You know why I know Obama thinks it? Because I’ve heard him say it.” Not about the Constitution, but about the Supreme Court. Again, 2001, FM radio station interview in Chicago when he was a state senator in Illinois.

OBAMA 2001: If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to vest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples so that, uh, I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at a lunch counter and — and order and as long as I could pay for it I’d be okay. But the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.”

Rush set the media up again. They are running with this story the same way they did the lies and fake quotes that were made about race and attributed to Rush.

Rush wins this one hands down and it was simply brilliant on his part.

As soon as Rush mentioned that article, I went researching for it and never found the thesis…that is why I didn’t post the story.

For those who didn’t actually hear his broadcast:

Rush spent 20 minutes talking about how the article was unsubstantiated but from Obama’s already public views he gave on the Supreme Court, “the Constitution having ‘negative’ rights,” it would not be too surprising if Obama had such a thesis. Heaven forbid the Media ever get their facts right.

Hypogean said, “Weird that liberals get so excited that an entertainer fell for one hoax, when the entire world (except for a handful of us smart people) has fallen for the comprehensive hoax that is Obama.”

Well, Hypogean, you have to remember that liberals are so much “smarter” than the rest of us that they can do anything and it won’t be wrong, but if someone on the right makes one mistake, they are “an idiot”……

Using “liberal logic” therefore, they are absolved from the huge mistake that is obama, while Rush is to be condemned because he read something on the air that very well could have been written by obama, but which turned out not to be.

(With what we know about obama, the more probable truth is that what he wrote might well be worse than what the hoax posits as his “thesis”!)

Still, with their “moral noses in the air”, liberals will continue to sniff that they would not have fallen for any such hoax…..at which point I would point to a picture of obama and say, “Oh, yeah?!”

Classic indeed but not classy. Real men fight for their country, they just don’t stand by and look at the destruction taking place and especially if it is done by a Usurper who has no constitution rights to rule or govern you. They don’t wait 4 years.

.And yet, craig has the unmitigated gall to deny that he is an agente prvocateur – while calling on others to take up arms against the government.

We should wonder at his motives for trying so hard to discourage Americans from following their laws and legal procedures in a peaceful manner – and a)try to depend on a losing strategy that will only increase frustration and unrest to the point of b)armed insurrection against the United States. Why would he do that if he’s NOT actually an agente provocateur (and possibly in the pay of the leftists)?

Why would craig seek to rouse people to discuss revolution on this blog? Could it be so that it will bring scrutiny by law enforcement agencies upon this blog, its owner and the people who post here? That would seem to be the action of an agente provocateur.

I’ve said it before – and I maintain – that craig is an AGENTE PROVOCATEUR working against the interests of Conservatives and trying to further the leftist cause.

Ann IA, I stopped reading this blog some time ago because of Jim’s frequent drama queen tendencies. He does tend to exaggerate and over dramatize posts from time to time and it spoils what is otherwise an excellent and very valuable blog. I haven’t been here for a few weeks and stopped by today to see if anything had changed (apart from the blog location) – and what do I see? This excellent example of….Jim Hoft’s drama queen tendencies! I just think he’s too quick to get excited sometimes and as a result he posts things without looking into them enough.

I don’t know about anyone else here but I read the blogs for news bits you either don’t see in the mainstream media or you’ll find faster in the blogs. And Gateway Pundit is usually my first stop. To mix real news and satire with nothing more than a “satire” tag in small font at the bottom of a post is not really all that responsible in my opinion. Someone going directly to a link could easily miss the tag. If they want to be taken seriously they should pick a genre and stick with it in my opinion.

Anyone reading up on Bozo debates with academics will understand Bozo knows little to nothing. It is understandable he releases nothing of his school days. What is there to report when his wittings are clearly littered with rot replication and no critical thinking?

The MSM almost NEVER checks their stories, thus I find it hilarious they call other others for it. Hypocrites, all of them.

There are several satirical sites out there, thus everybody should be careful (http://www.nytimes-se.com/ – though I believe the latter is no longer available).

I do take JIP’s side, however. I like Rush Limbaugh, but he should be careful what he links out.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen bloggers (both sides are guilty) rush out a story before checking the facts. Or bloggers who write catchy headlines and catchy stories, yet the facts don’t exactly match up. This then means they typically edit the story later to fix their mistakes (few show updates, few admit they were wrong).

The blogger put his stories under the satire folder, people should verify things with several sources instead of trying desperately to be the first to leak a story. Not all of his posts are satirical, and he is not dangerous by any means.

Let’s try to keep making the left look like fools, instead of ourselves. Conservatives are better than this. I’m tired of Media Matters saying the right is “pathetic,” because of a radio host’s mistake, yet the left wing MSM constantly does this and ignores fixing their wrongs.

They have some satire (which is labeled), and they’re clearly a blogspot blog, so why would Rush just trust a random blog instead of looking for an actual credible news source? Why would a blog somehow have access to his thesis if real news agencies didn’t? If he was linking to a real news org that did have access to the thesis, Rush should have looked at the real news org link to see if they wrote about it.

It’s funny cuz Rush was being misquoted in a fake story and now he fell for a fake story. Even a fake story from a blog post that was really old. And also a thesis on a topic unrelated to what Obama’s thesis was about.
