Former Senator Fred Thompson responded today to Newt Gingrich’s accusations yesterday that those conservatives who supported Doug Hoffman were “misguided.”
Fred Thompson released this ad today in support of conservative Doug Hoffman.
The Politico reported:
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson brushed back former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Tuesday over Gingrich’s warning that the Republican Party is wrong to thrown in its lot with the Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman over Dede Scozzafava, the GOP’s candidate, in the special election in New York’s 23rd congressional district.
Gingrich has called the many prominent national Republicans – including Thompson – who have endorsed Hoffman over Scozzafava in recent days “misguided,” arguing they are making a “mistake” to back a third-party candidate over the party’s nominee…
During his radio show Tuesday, Thompson said he was “sad” to hear “when a good Republican friend of mine says that I, and the other good, conservative Republicans who have endorsed Hoffman, are ‘misguided.’ And that’d be my friend, Newt Gingrich.”
“I respect Newt. He’s a friend. Done a lot of good, I think. But he endorsed Scozzafava early on. So, we have an honest disagreement in the family,” Thompson said…
“Are we saying that as Americans you’ve got to have an ‘R’ by your name before you vote for them? Where do you draw the line?” he continued. “If somebody with a record like this gets our seal of approval, regardless, only because she’s got an ‘R’ by the name… You know, just because we’re Republicans doesn’t mean that we’re deaf, dumb, and blind.”
Thompson is classy as usual in his response to Newt.

Message to Newt — move on old man (& I’m older than you are!), you’ve been in D.C. too long. You’ve forgotten what America is all about and it’s not just D and R. It’s about conservative values, liberty, love of country and a can do attitude. We are a REPUBLIC – D.C an the political parties work for us. We don’t want – no, we WON’T HAVE any more RINOS in government.

Fred’s got class. Lot’s of class – and that’s what’s missing in most of today’s politicians.
I really wish that he’d gotten the nomination.
Thompson/Palin. Yowzah!

Sit on the couch with Pilosi Newt, we’re beginning to see who you really are. You are looking for your share of the money from crap and tax, as is McCain and Graham. A pox on your houses.

Well said Fred Thompson. We will not be guided to what they say we should stand for; we are not on the left side of sacrificing our freedoms and liberties and beliefs.

Conservatives misguided? No, Newt miscalculated.

Newt is upset because he realizes his political aspirations are threatened. He knows that his brand of ’sitting on a park bench with Pelosi’ politics are reaching the end.

I have lost respect for Gingrich. Back when the WA D.C. TEA Party protests happened, Newt wrote an email newsletter (including photos) about his trip to China with his wife. If I recall correctly, he mentioned that he would write about the protests in a future newsletter. Unless I missed it, I never saw anything written by him in favor and/or support for the TEA Party movement. Now I know why!
I had been receiving a lot of mail from his organization asking for donations. I wrote across the reply envelope – “no donations until Gingrich investigates Obama’s ineligibility controversy.” I figured that would stop the solicitations! Guess what? It worked!

This post proves that we’re misguided? That’s hilarious! You seriously expect us to believe that you’re coming here to tell us that we’re misguided? You’re concerned for our welfare and want to make sure we vote for the person who will win the election and thus implement the conservative agenda?
Your post proves that Gingrich’s input on this issue is worthless.

Fred Thompson was my original favorite for the presidency. Could you imagine if we had him in the White House now instead of Obama? Thompson is a real man. Not some whiny, childish, Muslim boy king.

I was espcially struck by Newt’s (Sunday) comment that if Hoffman splits the vote, and the Dem. wins, that would leave Pilosi as “speaker for life and insure a 2nd term for Obama.”
WHAT?
Gosh, we all better vote for Scuzzafava, ’cause Newt says it’ll be the end of the world. As he sees it. Really it will be the start of the end for the RINO’S. It’ll show the country-club republicans it IS NO LONGER business as usual. It will demonstrate that the McCain/BushI&II/Snowe/GrahamRINO-PAC R’s that the collusion, big tent party is OVER! Done. I want my party back. These idiots are the ones who allowed RahmObama to rise. Let’s send them packing.

The conservative movement has a life of it`s own and is unbeholden to the Republican Party. If the Republican Party wants to tap into this movement to regain some credibility it will take someone with broader vision than Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele.

I second Sequoia’s post. Moreover,as a resident of New York State ,I find “deadman walking” Newt ,who lives in Georgia,to be a cad for denigrating Mr. hoffman.

Teh Fred! hits another homerun. I agree with the other posters here who wished that this excellent man could have been our POTUS this time. Or next. Or any time.
There are lots of reasons why he didn’t get the nod, but you know the biggest reason he wasn’t our candidate? Because he was the only candidate who dared say that America’s entitlement mentality was killing us and we were going to have to make some very hard choices. He was also fourquare on illegal immigration, which chapped the butts of the moderates in the GOP.
I’m glad, though, that it was John Sydney McCain who got the nomination and who is now irrevocably damaged goods for that lousy campaign.

Amen! We have too many people in Congress right now with an R after their name which means absolutely nothing to conservatives since these RINOs certainly don’t represent our interests.
Newt lost any possible support from me (and yes, he’s been right about a lot of things lately) with this stupidity.

Jim Demint(R-SC) is calling for term limits, 3 for the house of representatives, 2 for the senate. I don’t think he goes far enough, there should be a 10 year “cooling off” period for anyone that wants to switch from the house to the senate, or vice-versa. And a 10 year “cooling off” period if they want to return as a lobbyist. We need to destroy the idea that America has a ruling class!

I voted for Fred in the primary and thought he was more electable than McCain…we’ll never know now.
There is something wonderful about the NY-23 election that is galvanizing the Conservative base and it is exactly the right place/time to have this discussion between the Repub Moderates and their worthiness to be home to most Conservatives!

I lived in Williamsville NY from 1987 until 2006 and witnessed NY state republican politics up close. The district chairmen wield significant power in the state. I suspect it was “Dede’s turn” as they would say. The notion that the party had a primary and nominated her is not true.

As I understand it, the Republican PARTY in NY picked Dede overwhelmingly over Doug, a ‘Moderate’ over a ‘Conservative’. Fair enough, but the polls show that a Majority of the upstate VOTERS want a ‘CONSERVATIVE’. Republicans across the country should pay attention to the message in this election. Sorry about the excessive use of caps, but a lot of Republican as well as Democratic operatives seem to have trouble hearing the new message from the voters.

I just sent the RNC a reply to their last solicitation saying “NO money until you stop supporting RINOs.” I included a copy of the letter I sent donating money to the Hoffman campaign (because Sarah Palin came out supporting him).
Perhaps the Conservative party will allow the Republicans to caucus with us in the next Congress.
