Waiting in line for health care.
flu
Some of the 1,200 people who braved rain and 39 degree (3 degrees Celcius) temperatures queue to receive a free H1N1 flu vaccine at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago October 24, 2009. (Reuters)

Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency today. Over 1,000 people have died from the swine flu in the US this year.
The AP reported:

President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect noninfected patients.

The declaration, signed Friday night and announced Saturday, comes with the disease more prevalent than ever in the country and production delays undercutting the government’s initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses of the vaccine could be available by mid-October.

Health authorities say more than 1,000 people in the United States, including almost 100 children, have died from the strain of flu known as H1N1, and 46 states have widespread flu activity. So far only 11 million doses have gone out to health departments, doctor’s offices and other providers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.

But, despite the national emergency, Barack and Michelle have decided not to inoculate their two girls against the H1N1 virus.

Swine Flu has been an issue since last winter, and we actually have a shortage of shots for it?

    Epic Big Government fail.

Since when can’t America even produce enough vaccines? Why do we accept this?

According to the article “…Gibbs says the vaccine is not available to them based on their risk.

“The Centers for Disease Control recommend that children ages 6 months through 18 years of age receive a vaccination against the H1N1 flu virus. At this time only children with chronic medical conditions are receiving the vaccination because their immune system is not strong enough to fight off the strain.”

It would be worse if he were insisting his daughters get the vaccine even though they don’t have chronic medical conditions and weaker immune systems than other children.

233 hospitalizations and 69 deaths out of a population of 24.9 million. By comparison, in 2007, 3363 people were killed in car accidents in Texas.

    For Alana and Michael:

Does it cross your Obama-defending little minds that if this thing is worthy of a “NATIONAL EMERGENCY!!1!!!11″ that not getting the entire family vaccinated would present a national security risk? No one would question them all getting the shots, and why on earth do they have to make it public one way or the other?

No matter what they say, the truth is almost always something different.

President Obama got a normal flu shot last week, he declined to get the H1N1 vaccine. If the Swine Flu is so serious doesn’t he have a responsibility to have the shot first thing so he can carry on his responsibilities for the people. Even his plane Air Force One is built special to protect him, the Secret Service costs the $$$ big time to protect him, but a shot to protect him from a virus that he himself has labeled “emergency” and “deadly” she will not take!

The standard issue Flue kills on average 1800 people a week during flu season.

Common sense people. If you get sick, take care of your self, and try not to infect others. Otherwise, carry on. From the looks of it, this is a rather light flu season so far, no matter which flu it is.

this is overblown! 1000 drunk drivers get killed on the freeway every month, 1000 people get killed by gunshot every month.

More people will die from the vaccine then the actual virus itself.

Katrina was an emergency, California state going bankrupt is an emergency. This flu scare is to distract us from the obamacare legislation. Just like Michael Jackson (RIP) distracted us from “cap and trade”. Never let a good crisis go to waste.

My, my, Virginia, what a principled stance! See Michael H.’s response below yours. It was a stupid strawman that trolls constructed the first time or two, repeating it doesn’t make it smarter.

There is no reasonable defense for this decision by the Obamas. If they won’t have their own children get this shot–nor apparently themselves–then nobody should be getting the shot. Got any answer as to why so many health care workers are refusing the shot, too?

Your “news” blurb claims that President and Mrs. Obama “decided not to inoculate” their daughters. And then you provide a link to Fox News that one would suppose would confirm your point.

Instead, the FOX NEWS STORY says, “At this time only children with chronic medical conditions are receiving the vaccination because their immune system is not strong enough to fight off the strain.”

That’s just a tad DIFFERENT from “deciding not to inoculate,” isn’t it, you silly douchenozzles.

So which is it? Are you liars or are you just stupid?

    BrianNo Gravatar

The blog post states that this was a deliberate decision by the Obamas, but the referenced article doesn’t say that at all, but rather speaks of their daughters not being at high risk, and the vaccine being preferentially given to children with chronic medical conditions. I’m not a fan of Obama, nor have I made my own decision regarding the vaccine; however, at the very least the referenced article should support the accusation of the blog post.

These morons won’t quit crying wolf. First it was SARS, then Bird Flu, now it’s Swine Flu. They keep saying ‘this is the next Spanish Flu’ until the last case is reported. They are not only hysterical but they are doing incredible damage. By continuing to cry wolf, they will completely erode public trust. They have already lost mine, but I know the hard-left clings to their own much longer. By eventually completely destroying public trust like this, when the real thing does come, nobody will listen and we will have a massive death toll, perhaps in the hundreds of millions worldwide. These nuts will blame the people for not listening to them, but in the end it will be their own fault given they give so many false alarms and stick to them so fervently.

Excellent point, Stephen. And by concentrating all the drug companies on producing the vaccine for this type of flu, what do you want to bet there well be more deaths from seasonal flu this year due to so many people not being able to get THAT vaccine? Doctors’ offices, drug stores, clinics—almost all of them are out of the regular flu shot already. But Obama got that one, didn’t he? He didn’t put himself in the back of the line and put his citizens’ needs above his own.

According to their own website, 36,000 die each year from flu. A thousand died so far this year. That is thirty six times less than normal? And it is a crisis?

Tell that to the students who are not attending private schools in DC any more due to the ending of the vouchers program. BO gave other students the boot, while choosing to put his daughters in the same school.

I am sure this was not the hope & change the students’ parents thought they’d get.

I know that you’re not an obama defender, Alana. And I know, too, that the obama girls are not in line to be vaccinated unless they’re medically qualified. Stating a fact such as that is NOT “defending” obama.

However, since barry *is* the “president”, I’d think that (since he’s somewhat ‘essential’ to the functioning of the government during this grave crisis) he and his immediate family – and white house personnel and staff members with whom he interacts daily – would be first in line to get the H1N1 vaccine.

I find it extremely odd that, not only will he not have mo and the girls vaccinated, but that HE won’t take the vaccine!

Thank you, Solartov, and I agree with your points – the one about Obama himself not getting the shot, which he could have and should have, with fanfare. (But not the girls, because they would have been seen as getting special treatment.)

It’s important that people new to this site not become so . . . er, enthusiastic, that they start slinging attacks at simple points, or simple disagreements.

I could not begin to articulate the low opinion I have of Obama and all his associates. I have never disliked, distrusted, or had so much disgust for, a president or administration in my life.

Id class this as a national security issue. 1) The President should take all precautions at his disposal to remain healthy and 2) his family should also be protected. The last thing the country needs is a President not focused because one of his kids contracts a virus that could have be vaccinated against. And for the record, Im not an Obama supporter, but he is the president and as such has a responsibility to the nation to minimize risks to his ability to function.

The article doesn’t state that the Obama’s “decided against” getting their daughters the vaccine but that it wasn’t available to them yet. I think one commenter had it right when he/she said we’d be indignant if Obama pushed his girls to the front of the line.

We’re in the military serving in South Korea and have 4 children. Only one got the swine flu-mist vaccine. I don’t want my kids to have it, although I admit I’m torn. The regular yearly flu vaccine we’ve never gotten and never had a need for.

This vaccine is just too much too fast. I’m not going to trust it yet.

I’m wondering why this was declared a national emergency. Is it really? I don’t think so. I think this is Obama’s attempt to be a hero at something and show he really can protect the American people. He hasn’t accomplished anything in his presidency so far, and I think this is some sort of cover.

Lets see new flu pops up in Mexico in April while bho is there reports say over 1 thousand dead.
1.Next Mexico shuts down for a few weeks and the WHO revises and says only 150 died from the flu.
2.Next WHO gets some money to pay their people.
3.Next people get sick who visited over spring break and head home Europe many get sick and only 8 dead.
4.Next h1n1 hits in the winter in the southern hemisphere lots of people get sick number of deaths so few not even reported at this time there is no vaccine.
5.Next the drugs told to the public that will fight the flu causes the young to commit suicide so don’t give it to teens. (that would be tamiflu and the other anti-virile drugs made by the companies making this new vaccine. )
6.Next we are told only the healthy children school age will receive this experimental vaccine even the British complain say that is criminal.
7.Next we hear from some Blue states that this new vaccine is being tested test results not published.
8.Next we hear from these blue states that children will not be able to go to school without the vaccine and Parents will be held because their children are truant.
9.Next we hear that the CDC is no longer testing for h1n1.
10.Next we hear bho has declared a national emergency which extends powers beyond the powers of his office and suspends habeas corpus .
11.Next when looking at the Map set out by bhos people the states where they have already stated 6 weeks might be what they quarantine or are states that have huge Tea Party’s and are not Blue states.

Yet being in one of these states I have heard no reports of Flu, nor know any sick people.
Now my mind works in strange ways but I see a storm coming and it aint the Flu.
Lets not forget Baxter the top vaccine maker says it can not reproduce this virus. Well you cannot make a vaccine without the virus.

Well, if President Panic sets this as a national emergency, it appears every year must be a national emergency. According to his own CDC, an average of 36,000 people a year die of regular flu, or related. Our president is either an idiot or a shameless political hack. Or both. He sure as hell isn’t decent.

    Bullshit.

H1N1 is NOT an issue. Anyone who says it is, is lying.

Also “swine flu” can not and will not create a problem like the Spanish Flu. It’s not possible. It is not possible.

Spanish Flu killed so many people for one simple reason: people were weak, riddled by plenty of other life-threatening diseases (such as typhus and cholera) because of WW1. When the flu came, of course they died like flies.

“(NaturalNews) According to the CDC, swine flu infections have already peaked, and the pandemic is on its way out. Peak infection time was the middle of October, where one in five U.S. children experienced the flu, says the CDC. Out of nearly 14,000 suspected flu cases tested during the week ending on October 10, 2009, 99.6% of those were influenza A, and the vast majority of those were confirmed as H1N1 swine flu infections. (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/)…The only emergency I can see is the emergency fabricated by Big Pharma to sell more vaccines. By declaring a national emergency over the H1N1 pandemic, Obama is playing right into their hands.” http://www.naturalnews.com/027323_swine_flu_national_emergency_pandemic.html

Did some research – H1N1 is highly contagious. The good news is it hasn’t (yet) morphed into a more virulent form. At present, it’s not much more deadly than the regular seasonal flu. We don’t have any immunity to this strain of swine flu, because it is so new. Us old farts who have had various forms of flu over the years have at least partial immunity, at least in severity.
The thing to be frightened about is the avian flu that surfaced in 2006 in Southeast Asia (think it’s H5N1) and has been spreading slowly ever since. The death rate is 60%. But it’s not an airborne type flu, so the good news it spreads more slowly.
But, if these two strains ever got together in a pig (their favorite incubator) and shared some RNA, we could end up with a fast-spreading worldwide killer. Have a nice day.

30,000 people die each year from influenza. More than 4,000 people die every year from asthma. Nearly 400 Americans die each year due to drug allergies from penicillin alone. What about the 200 people who die every year from food allergies?
    – Where is the national emergency for these Americans?

This is nothing more than a power grab by the administration. Your children will now be forced to have the vaccine in order to attend public school! Wake up.

This is the first year the CDC (government) has been in charge of distributing vaccines. Even last year the doctors, hospitals and clinics purchased, received and distributed through the manufacturers.
    – The government has spent $2 billion on this vaccine to date of taxpayer money as a bribe to Big Pharma to go along with ObamaCare but the players in Congress refused to agree to Obama’s word not to renegotiate drug costs and Big Pharma walked. Who is getting played? Wake up.

More Americans have been murdered by Illegal Aliens than have died from Swine Flu during the same time period; add to that violent rape and child molestation and you see that illegal immigration is statistically more unhealthy for Americans than Swine Flu (by 250-300%).

However the US Federal Government is not apparently interested in real risk analysis because the explosive side of the potential benefits them: would, could, might, and maybe, all create a theater of fear that allows them to expand emergency powers of Government.

    Next up: Martial Law.
