breast cancer
Obamacare has not even passed into law but the feds are already calling for less breast cancer screening.
The Washington Post reported, via HotAir:

Women in their 40s should stop routinely having annual mammograms and older women should cut back to one scheduled exam every other year, an influential federal task force has concluded, challenging the use of one of the most common medical tests.

In its first reevaluation of breast cancer screening since 2002, the independent government-appointed panel recommended the changes, citing evidence that the potential harm to women having annual exams beginning at age 40 outweighs the benefit.

Coming amid a highly charged national debate over health-care reform and simmering suspicions about the possibility of rationing medical services, the recommendations immediately became enveloped in controversy.

“We’re not saying women shouldn’t get screened. Screening does saves lives,” said Diana B. Petitti, vice chairman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which released the recommendations Monday in a paper being published in Tuesday’s Annals of Internal Medicine. “But we are recommending against routine screening. There are important and serious negatives or harms that need to be considered carefully.”

This is certainly a surprising move by the feds. Researchers discovered that it was because of breast cancer screenings that women with breast cancer have a 14 percent higher survival rate in the United States than in Europe. Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Breast cancer mortality is also 9 percent higher in Canada than in the US. Less than 25 percent of U.S. women die from breast cancer. In Britain, it’s 46 percent; France, 35 percent; Germany, 31 percent; Canada, 28 percent; Australia, 28 percent, and New Zealand, 46 percent.

It looks like that is about to change even before Obamacare.

As in disposing of too-big-to-fail banks which fell for the federal subprime mortgage scam, federal bureaucrats know far more than do greedy free-market types.

Yeah, wouldn’t want to save any women with breast cancer….too expensive.

I wonder if they are going to use stimulus money to put video cameras in all showers to make sure those under 50 aren’t doing monthly breast checks. Can’t have that. You have to have Stage 4 and be a voting liberal to get breast cancer care.

I hate this administration with every ounce of my being.

It’s important to get that baseline survivability number down before Obamacare kicks in, so they can crow about maintaining or slightly improving the rate later.

Hell hath no fury as a scorned woman.

The Democrats and Obama just lost the majority of womens’ votes. And how many mens’ votes as they know this rationing affects their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters?

Just say NO. Tell your senators this is a death sentence for American women.

The leftist libtard champions of women, the poor, old, dowwntrodden,& minorities have jumped the shark again with the marxist state media cheerleading their genocidal plans for the those they tell us they defend.
Every time the elites open their pieholes they reveal their orwellian intentions.

The cost of mammograms for boomers is rising.

This interferes with the budget for NYC flyovers and date nights, to say nothing of the funds necessary to finance Brazil’s drilling program.

It’s all about priorities. The only boobs getting financial attention are in the WH.

This is just the beginning. If they can stuff this one down the people’s throats, they’ll start trying to delay every type of preventative exam.

    Yearly physicals? Don’t need’em.
    Colonoscopy? Wait until you’re sixty.

And on and on. Just cut back on “preventative medicine”, and it’ll save all kinds of money. After all, dead people don’t need expensive treatments.

After thinking about this issue and all the statements Obama has made for this health plan, wasn’t one of his main platforms “preventative medicine”? Hasn’t he said if we paid for preventative medicine for everyone that THOSE expenditures would save us money in the long run? Isn’t that what mammograms are used for?

Oh, this will be GREAT fodder for those 2010 elections against those Democrats who supported this plan. YOU LIE!

I am just wondering if the obamao will still be pushing death care after the Chinese told him to shelf the plan or forget any more credit. We might see the Senate make a weak effort at getting it passed then nothing. The Chinese I believe have thrown a monkey wrench in the obamaos plans to socialize America because they will be the biggest losers.

I guess it is obviously revealing that the healthcare bill is not for reform after all. We are already into rationing when the bills has not been pass. Do you think the democrats and their cabals wants to loot the country?

Things are already changing behind the scenes—and don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise. A family friend in her 70s found that she was once again in pain from a long term ailment. She had a surgery a few years ago to alleviate the pain. When the pain came back, she saw her physician and told him she felt ready to undergo the same treatment to alleviate the pain. Her physician said she wasn’t eligible anymore per some changes that came down after a meeting in Washington, DC (forgive the vagueness regarding the details–don’t have the email in front of me). She was stunned. This woman now has no options—she must live in pain for the rest of her life. Don’t think for a minute that the upcoming changes, if passed, won’t have a horrifying effect on you and your family members. No matter what your political position—you will feel it.

The one that really boggles my mind is when they talk about controlling healthcare costs in one breath, and in the next they are taxing medical devices. They must really believe that we’re stupid. I definitely believe that they want to control healthcare. It’s the costs that I’m not so sure about.

An early mamogram identified my wifes breast cancer that had spread to lymph nodes. Surgery, radiation and chemo has allowed her to be a survivor for ten years now. I dispise beyond belief that a doctor would diss early detection. This by itself should be enough to freeze the Obama presidency. Any member of congress that supports the centralized medical planning should be voted out. Replacement with a rational Dem or non rino would be equally acceptable

I too believe they are trying to run this through before the bill gets passed; I can remember seeing that end-of-life question before.

Was just on Fox New Channel 2 St Louis MO; the Missouri Assoc of Insurance Companies state they will not agree to the government’s recommendation and will allow insurance coverage for mammo…at the age of 35. There is a comments section on the news station if anyone wants to respond.

Don’t know what it will take to get through the liberal’s minds, that this is not about healthcare. The dem..politicians could care less about the quality of medical care people receive. It’s about micro-managing private lives, ending lives as they see fit and paying back those who elected them.

The AMA is backing someone who says doctors remover tonsils for money (more than treatment) and remove feet for money, and now doctors let people who don’t have insurance die in the ER. Obama/AP “Uninsured emergency room patients twice as likely to die as people who don’t have insurance when they show up in the ER.” O’Dumbo may want to stay out of the ER’s. The only people he hasn’t insulted are the pilots of AF 1. Do that and go spat on the side of a mountain. Health care bill cost is now in excess of $3 trillion when you take out/add in the lying politicians numbers.
The U.S. congress (and white house) is now a total criminal enterprise. But what do you expect from liars and thieves?

Isn’t this amazing? Here we have an example of health care rationing to save costs, and a “death panel” making the decision on not to screen.

Add in the whole H1N1 swine flu vaccine fiasco, and the government is making a lousy case to run health care.

    ArchNo Gravatar
    November 18th, 2009 | 6:38 am | #27

Apparently, this decision was made by a group of GPs without peer review and without participation of radiologists on oncologists. Both my mother and my mother-in-law are breast cancer survivors whose tumors were found through mammography. Neither of them think this decision makes much sense. The tests are not all that expensive when compared to treating a stage four cancer. Also, cancer deaths among women under 50 have been reduced by 40% because of early detection.

The worst part of this idea is that treatments are to be based on cost rather than health, confirming what Palin called “death panels.”
