Jim Hoft

Harry Reid played the slave card tonight and democrats moved their nationalized health care plan forward tonight.
Harry Reid also said it was FREE!
It’s fully paid for!

The vote tonight was 60-39.
It was a straight party line vote. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins voted with the GOP tonight.

The AP rejoiced:

Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.

The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.

The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.

In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

“Imagine if, instead of debating whether to abolish slavery, instead of debating whether giving women and minorities the right to vote, those who disagreed had muted discussion and killed any vote,” he said.

The Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said the vote was anything but procedural — casting it as a referendum on the bill itself, which he said would raise taxes, cut Medicare and create a “massive and unsustainable debt.”

For the record… The democrats were the pro-slavery party 150 years ago, too.

Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, this is another injustice to Mary Jo Kopechne. This man should have been in prison for murder.

It is just pathetic to honor the late Sen. Kennedy. It is ashamed that they won’t listened to us. The Democratic will lose the election big in 2010 and 2012.

    Well, folks, suggestions out there?

Dems don’t listen to the people when they protest, email, call, fax, make a “House Call”…they don’t pay attention to the falling poll numbers for their party and leaders, they don’t care that 55% don’t want this bill…

What’s the plan now? Anbody have anything clever? Or do we need to run out of money, get a Republican majority and refuse to fund the program? Heck, we’ll be out of money in the 4 years it takes to front load this monstrosity, so perhaps it will take care of itself.

Did you notice Reid’s “cute” comment about running out of stuff to read, so he was re-reading a book? Bet the idiot never read this bill he corruptly pushed through the senate!!

What happened to Liebermann, who evidently voted Yes? I thought he wouldn’t let it pass!!! More big-talk without action, or was he paid off, too??

OK, Harry, since YOU’RE the one comparing government-run healthcare to abolishing slavery, we can safely say that tonight you abolished slavery for everyone EXCEPT THE PRESIDENT, SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN, WHO ARE ALL STILL ALLOWED TO OWN SLAVES.

“Imagine if, instead of debating whether to abolish slavery, instead of debating whether giving women and minorities the right to vote, those who disagreed had muted discussion and killed any vote,” he said.

    just a sample:

    Documented History Says

[History reveals that it was Thaddeus Stevens, a Radical Republican that introduced legislation to give African Americans the so-called 40 acres and a mule and Democrats overwhelmingly voted against the bill. Today many white Democrats are opposed to paying African Americans trillions of dollars in Reparation Pay, money that should be paid by the Democratic Party.

History reveals that it was Abolitionists and Radical Republicans such as Henry L. Morehouse and General Oliver Howard that started many of the traditional Black colleges, while Democrats fought to keep them closed. Many of our traditional Black colleges are named after white Republicans.

Congressional records show it was Democrats that strongly opposed the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. These three Amendments were introduced by Republicans to abolish slavery, give citizenship to all African Americans born in the United States and, give Blacks the right to vote.

Congressional records show that Democrats were opposed to passing the following laws that were introduced by Republicans to achieve civil rights for African Americans:

    Civil Rights Act 1866
    Reconstruction Act of 1867
Freedman Bureau Extension Act of 1866
    Enforcement Act of 1870
    Force Act of 1871
Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871
    Civil Rights Act of 1875
    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    Civil Rights Act of 1960

And during the 60's many Democrats fought hard to defeat the

    1964 Civil Rights Act
    1965 Voting Rights Acts
    1972 Equal Employment Opportunity Act

Court records shows that it was the Democrats that supported the Dred Scott Decision. The decision classified Blacks and property rather than people. It was also the racist Jim Crow practices initiated by Democrats that brought about the two landmark cases of Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v. The Board of Education.

At the turn of the century (1900), Southern Democrats continued to oppress African Americans by placing thousands in hard-core prison labor camps. According to most historians, the prison camps were far worst than slavery.]

The Truth May Inconvenience Harry’s Perceptions

[Indeed, I have a videotape of black historian, Dr. Edward Smith of American University in Washington D.C., in which he points out that at least 90,000 blacks served under arms in the Confederate armies. This long ignored, or silently suppressed fact is only now beginning to reach the public where it can help to alter our perceptions of the realities which existed in the Old South. It might be worth noting that in the Southern armies, black and white men were not segregated as they were in the Northern armies. They fought side by side with fellow Southerners. In support of this fact, perhaps you are not aware that the first military monument in Washington D.C. honoring black soldiers is in Arlington National Cemetery near the Custis-Lee Mansion. Erected in 1914 by Moses Ezekial, a Jewish Confederate who wanted to correctly portray the racial realities in the Southern armies, it clearly shows a black soldier marching in step with his white comrades in arms. It further portrays the trust that existed between them by depicting a black woman receiving a white soldier’s child for protection as he is going off to war. Somehow, this Confederate monument is never pointed out on the usual tours that you’ll get up there. Does anyone think they might know why?

    [..]

We must come to understand that slavery can come in many forms and under many names. It may still be of a physical nature, best represented today perhaps by imprisonment. What kind of a society imprisons 2 million of its people? Is not media propaganda, government indoctrination of our school children, and mandatory sensitivity training a form of intellectual or mental slavery? Can’t we become slaves to our passions, our fears, or any series of misconceptions and falsehoods on which we act? Can we not be legislated into slavery, or simply taxed into it? If many blacks recoil in horror at the thought of tens of thousands of black Confederates fighting and dying under the Confederate Battle Flag 135 years ago, it may just show the extent of their indoctrination, their alienation with the past, and the magnitude of the challenge Southerners face in ending racial hostility.]

    indeed Harry, indeed..

Why not add the segregation card….I mean it was more recent, only 96 years ago when Wilson, segregated the federal government and army, and defended the principles behind segregation saying it was in the best interests of all….even going so far as to defend the KKK.

Like the President and Vice President, Harry Reid needs to study American history. The debates on the issues Mr. Reid mentioned were debated in the proper place, the United States Supreme Court, not in the legislative branch of the government. Mr. Reid needs to remember he nor the President have the constitutional authority to take over private industries. Read “Youngstown sheet and tube company v Sawyer”. The Supreme Court ruled against President Truman when he seized the mills on April 8, 1952. I do agree with Mr. Reid in that America does need to have this debate , but it needs to be debated in the Supreme Court not in Congress.

That’s a real good one, Harry!

You and all your Corruptocrat/union thug/race warrior/radical leftist terrorists and your drool cupped Obamao worshiping Orcs and Trolls have just committed collective suicide.

I know enough about human nature to understand what the reaction will be when people finally see how much they are going to have to pay for this. You can read about it in the history books-see France, 1789.

Don’t Have a Seizure Over the ObamaCare Cloture Vote…

    snip
Finally, I am nowhere near as pessimistic as others on the inevitability of some version of ObamaCare being implemented, even if it passes both chambers and is signed by the president. If the Republicans can take over even a single chamber — a possibility made much more likely by the passage of a staggering tax, the looting of Medicare, and looming medical-care rationing — then the GOP can stop the actual implementation of ObamaCare simply by refusing to fund it… and that cannot even be vetoed by Barack H. Obama, because it would be a negative act: They can fail to vote for funding, and that effectively kills it. (In fact, Republicans can even run on a “reverse the vote!’ platform.)

So put on your manly gown, gird your loins, and pull up your socks; we still have many bites left at the apple, quite a few more chances to strangle this serpent in the grass. Stopping debate from beginning was always the least likely of all possible ways to kill ObamaCare.

Man up — we’ve still got a fight on our hands!

    Chisum,

Could the GOP also do away with the front-loaded taxes?

And what could they do about the mass exodus out of the medical profession that has already begun just because of the threat of a government takeover?

    ChisumNo Gravatar
    November 22nd, 2009 | 1:29 pm | #28

    Cassandra,

The front loaded taxes are not going into a set-aside fund. Not according to this bill. The taxes that are collected are going into the general fund. The dems are purposely misrepresenting this to the American people. They have no choice. They need the revenues. Particularly since cap and trade is all but dead. And they were really really counting on that boondoggle to fund their agenda.

What mass exodus? Don’t you think a prudent person will wait a bit to see which way the political winds blow? Particularly since this doesn’t phase in until 2013, should it become law. The dems have to survive the 2010 elections. And the election cycle has already begun.
