It has begun…
TP2
Green activists want a ban on the really soft toilet tissue.
Kentucky.com reported, via FOX Nation:

Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups have pushed manufacturers such as Kimberly-Clark (Cottonelle) and Procter & Gamble (Charmin) to stop using wood from virgin forests to make tissue products.

Mountains of paper are dumped every day into recycling bins in homes, offices, factories and schools. Use that to make toilet paper, the activists said.

Time to roll off the big number: If each American family would buy one recycled roll just one time, it would save 400,000 trees, allegedly.

The problem, though, is that each time paper is shredded during the recycling process, its fibers get shorter. The shorter the fiber, the less soft the tissue. And Americans, though indicating in surveys that they embraced green initiatives, also said they don’t want to sacrifice comfort.

“The truth is that other parts of the world are further along in using recycled content,” said Kay Jackson, spokeswoman for Kimberly-Clark. “The American consumer still wants softness, and they are speaking with their pocketbooks.”

Pulling back in a competitive market is asking a lot, manufacturers said. They also point out that only 5 percent of forest-industry production goes toward toilet paper.

Darby Hoover, a senior resource specialist with the Natural Resources Defense Council, understands the pressure of customer demand but wonders: Do we really need toilet paper to be as soft as it can be, or do we need it just soft enough?

Environmentalists said other countries — particularly in South America, Africa and Asia — seem to be OK with “soft enough.”

Reminds me of the story about the bear and the bunny side by side in the forest performing a “needed bodily function”. The bear asks the bunny, “Does poop stick to your fur?” “No,” replied the bunny, at which point the bear picked up the bunny and wiped with him. I feel the same way about the Greenpeace and other environmental Fascists. Maybe they would like to put their ….oh, never mind.

Actually, a humongous amount of paper is manufactured from plantation grown trees, especially in the E and SE USA. Plantations, well managed, produce about twice or more the fiber per acre that natural forests do and, therefore reduce the need to harvest natural forests. Also, when those natural forests *are* harvested, the really big trees, like the Douglass Fir out west, are principally used for dimensional lumber (e.g., 2×4s), not paper pulp. So recycling for TP seems a doubtful way to save natural woodlands.

When I was in England years ago, I was wishing for a roll of US TP or even an old US telephone book to use. Their TP is about as absorbent as wax paper. They all must be constipated as bunnies.

I will take my Charmin Ultra, thank you.

I was doing an Automation project at a St Regis paper mill in Jacksonville Fla, and they used a lot of pine logs too small for lumber, and skived Saw Mill tailings to make Card Board. I think they shipped some other raw preprocessed stock to other mills.

This is where the allegedly green movement comes to a screatching halt. The proposition that using a renewable resource is bad for the environment is exactly the kind of claim that makes their entire cause look foolish at best, and sinister at worst.

I forget who said it (P.J. O’Rourke maybe?) but it goes something like this:

The *overwhelming* majority of trees cut down to make paper were grown specifically for that purpose. Cutting down on paper use to save trees is like eating less corn to conserve corn stalks.

    AdjoranNo Gravatar
    December 18th, 2009 | 11:38 pm | #17

DKN has it exactly correct: our “soft” toilet paper is made from pulpwood – trees too small to cut into lumber – which is a managed, renewable resource.

The “environmentalists” might as well be telling us to stop eating popcorn to “save the cornstalks!” It makes NO sense whatever.

Very stupid people make such pronouncements, and those who believe and follow them are even duller.

Great Northern uses fast-growing hybrid poplar trees to manufacture paper in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest. Forests are not being sacrificed for toilet tissue … the raw material is specifically grown for the process, just as corn is specifically grown to make ethanol.

I lived in Russia from 1996-9, and I bought plenty of very rough, non-absorbent toilet paper. The good American stuff was $$$$ at that time. Anyway, it’s not a pleasant experience. If your tp is not soft and does not absorb….well, you get a serious smearing, not wiping, effect.

Look, if these activists want to wipe their butts with razor grass, that’s their right. However, they have no right to decide what I should use to wipe my butt. In countries like China, toilet paper runs the gamut from young cardboard (a solid and very rough sheet; avoid using if you have the trots) to soft enough. When I discovered a brand (by accident) that produced a soft paper (decent by American standards), all my friends who visited and used the bathroom wanted to know where I got it. I generously gave them each a roll and told them the price. These jokers who are trying to set standards for butt wipes are just another set of communists seeking to deprive us of even simple personal rights like the brand of toilet paper we use. In a world in which the green revolution has sparked the replanting of trees, the one thing we do not lack is trees sufficient to keep us in soft wipes. Since staying in business means keeping trees planted, then the wackos are simply seeking power and control over us. That’s what it’s all about: power and control. Communist bastards!

So who verified they use “virgin” forests? They grow trees like a crop and replant once it is harvested. I hardly think they are cutting down old growth forests for the wood product they need. Here in the US we grow trees like corn. Go to “The Paper University” for paper answers http://www.tappi.org/paperu/all_about_paper/earth_answers/earthAnswers.htm

You are taking the wrong tack on this. Indeed, using virgin lumber for toilet paper is a waste (no pun intended). Certainly the way to get this accomplished is to make the market demand for toilet paper fabricated from virgin lumber approach zero. As opposed to hectoring the paper companies.

Instead of banging on the enviro-whack jobs for their goal, bang on them for their solution.

And, make it a point to help the rest of us by pushing on the demand curve by boycotting toilet paper made from virgin lumber.

Here is what we do .. we go to the store and deliberately pay more for paper made from 100% recycled paper. Every roll of paper towels and toilet paper in my home is selected because it does not contain paper made from virgin lumber.

Get on the solution train and quit bashing the enviro-whack jobs over the goal of their efforts. Teach them how to accomplish worthy goals in a free market.

I learned about the tree farms or tree plantations a few years ago when the meanie greenies took a swipe at Christmas trees, trying to guilt people out of buying them or into buying live trees that have to be planted after Christmas, instead. The trees that are sold at tree lots each year are also grown on tree farms.

The environmental nutjobs are full of it. They’re just joyless, angry people who take it out on everyone else, especially those who aren’t unhappy like they are. They take it out on them by taking advantage of the good nature and good intentions that most people possess, trying to make them feel guilty. They’re green ’cause they’re mean. They’re mean greenies.

Why do we want to “save trees”? They sequester carbon. If the enviros really believed in the dangers associated with human-caused global warming, they would push a policy to encourage the use of MORE trees to produce MORE paper, thereby sequestering MORE CARBON.

Why can’t we just use better logging practices? Clearcutting devastates ecosystems and can take centuries to fully regenerate, but selective cutting would take only trees that would have died anyway or contributed to wildfire danger. One project like this is already underway in my state of Colorado, where a proposel is in the works that would convert beetle kill trees (a huge problem along the western slope) into biofuels! Get rid of one problem, and fill the need for carbon nuetral fuel at an affordable cost, that’s a good solution! It’s really annoying to hear everyone bashing enviormentalism. It’s not there to “control your lives” or because they’re “angry people.” But because they feel a responsibility outside themselves, in the same way that you might inconviniance yourself to support American buisness.
