America’s worst president attacked Catholics and Southern Baptists for the abuse of women in a speech he gave in Australia.
He even blamed these traditional religious groups for female genital mutilation.
Lifesite News reported:

In an address to a gathering sponsored by the World Parliament of Religions (PWR) last Friday, former US President Jimmy Carter has once again blamed traditional religion, particularly Southern Baptists and Roman Catholics, for “creating an environment where violations against women are justified.”

…In opposition to the vast majority of authentic scholars and historians, Carter asserted: “It’s clear that during the early Christian era women served as deacons, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers and prophets.” He added: “It wasn’t until the 4th century or the 3rd at the earliest that dominant Christian leaders, all men, twisted and distorted Holy Scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant position within the religious hierarchy.”

Contrary to the theorizing of Carter, Pope John Paul II taught, “The Lord Jesus chose men to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.” He added: “the Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church; 1577)

Carter singled out the Southern Baptist Convention and Roman Catholic Church, claiming that they “view that the Almighty considers women to be inferior to men.” However, both Christian faiths hold to the Scriptural truth that God created men and women equal.

“Their continuing choice provides a foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world,” said Carter. Carter goes on to list horrific violations against women such as rape, genital mutilation, abortion of female embryos and spousal battery.

Responding to Carter’s nearly identical points in July, John Paul Meenan, Professor of Theology at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy in Barry’s Bay, Ontario characterized Carter’s points as “ridiculous,” noting that there was no evidence of the ordination of women in the early Church.

Last I checked it was the Muslims who performed female genital mutilation.
But, Jimmy Carter would never have the guts to single out Muslims like that.

That’s our Jimmah! So generously sharing his “wisdom” with the rest of us!

I’m rather chastened to think that we may have an even worse spectacle of future “wisdom” to look forward to in 30 years from Obama. Ugh.

I see Jimmy is getting senile. This has been going on for some time but it is hard to tell when the rot started settling in while he was spewing such idioticies as this. This guy has done a 180 degree turn from the religion of his youth. He is a bitter, little man who needs to fade off into the wings and shut his trap. Why is it, do you suppose, the dem presidents just can’t let go of the limelight?

With all due respect to the Office of the President of the United States–now with Messrs. Carter, Clinton and Obama not an easy task–Mr. Carter has been making rather incoherent speeches and know-nothing ramblings for a couple of decades. If we truly had an objecrtive media in this country, he’d be listed as the Fourth Stooge and politely ignored. And in any event, The World Parliament of Religion is a bit pixilated itself. Some of the folks there make “Men in Black” seem like a dcoumentary.

Why won’t this bafoon just go away? Why doesn’t he attack the U.N., whose workers rape young African girls?

I read last week that prominent Africans, including high ranking bishops, praised the Catholic church for all its work on the continent, particularly with helping the AIDS crisis.

And you’re right, Gateway, Muslims are the ones causing all the havoc, not Baptists and Catholics.

Interestingly enough, on the issue of global warming, the U.N. announced (as I’m sure you know) that the only hope in curbing global warming is population control. It’s interesting that all the libs praise this agenda yet it is the Muslims who refuse to submit. They are taking over Europe because of Europe’s self-imposed population control as they have a birth rate of just over 1 child per couple, not enough to sustain the next generation of Europeans. But that’s okay; the Muslims on the other hand don’t believe in birth control, abortion or populaton control and they’re outnumbering Europeans.

And it is the decline of Christianity in Europe that is facilitating all this.

So the next time you see an attack on Christianity by Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, et al, just remember the defening silence on Islamic practices (when’s the last time anyone heard Obama praising Christianity the way he praises Islam as “one of the world’s great religions”?).

These bunch of dolts are clueless. We cannot save them from themselves, but we can save our children from them. CHRISTIANS, HAVE MORE BABIES! It’s fun, too.

Also, to assume Jimmy Carter has a functioning view of Christianity is laughable. St. Paul wrote that there is neither Greek nor Hebrew, male nor female.. with Christ, emphasising equality in God’s eyes.

I agree that Jesus’ choice of men for his college of 12 apostles should not exclude women from the role of priest. Jesus was working within societies in which women could not hold positions of power. Even God could not make Doubting Thomas confident or Peter less of a hothead, and in the same way He could not make the Jews and Gentiles accept women in positions of leadership within the Church. It is up to people to correct the wrongs of previous generations and female priests would be a good step.

That said, I think Jimmy Carter has lost his mind in public by promoting the idea that because Christianity does not hold with women’s equal participation in the Church spiritual leadership that somehow led to Africans razoring out girls’ genitals, Indians and Pakistanis throwing acid in women’s faces, women choosing self-immolation over the misery of restricted lives, China’s practice of mutiliating girls’ feet, and so on and so on. Those practices developed independently of Christianity.

Looks like Jimmy must have read Kennedy-Townsend’s book – so badly written that it makes you cringe..It’s all out attack on the Catholic Church… a little bit of femi-nazi, a touch of leftist propaganda and a whole lot of ignorance. Townsend, like Jimmy, equates liberation with abortion. To argue for the murder of innocents in the public forum like Townsend and Jimmy necessitates placing one’s self above God.

    AussieNo Gravatar
    December 12th, 2009 | 7:10 pm | #39

When I read the title of the post I said to myself – WTF – Jimmah is a bigot. I am shocked that he also lambasted the Southern Baptists, but will get over that shock if someone can explain what version of Baptist that Jimmah expounds (I know that there are many varieties).

I am speaking as a Catholic here, and from what I have read and heard about Southern Baptists there is no way that they would be of the type to espouse harm to women. In lots of ways I have praise for these men and women because they have always been at the forefront of lending a hand in times of adversity, especially in situations like hurricane Katrina. So I am posting my own thanks to these fine men and women and their best intentions. I do not care to see them being maligned by that bigot Jimmah.

As a Catholic, I now address some of the more ridiculous statements especially the one about women serving as priests, apostles etc. etc. All that I can say is that Jimmah knows zip about Christian history. There were women who accompanied Jesus on his journeys, but they were not anointed to be a part of the inner ministry. It has nothing to do with the times but a lot to do with Jesus himself. The priesthood itself underwent changes over time. It started with the head of the household e.g. Abraham offering sacrifices to God, and then with Moses there were two types of priests – the first being that of the First Born Sons (which was taken away from them because of the golden calf incident) – and the institution of the Levites as priests.

It is important to follow the flow of Scripture here, because Jesus was the First-Born Son.

Priests act as in-situ Christi. A woman can never be in-situ Christi. It is not possible.

Now to deal with the other points. The violence against women in the African nations and elsewhere has nothing to do with either Catholics or Southern Baptists. I have never seen one Southern Baptist advocate that women be circumcised. I have not heard any Southern Baptist argue that a female embryo should be aborted because the parents want a son.

Jimmah should just shut up and stop making himself look so ridiculous because he refuses to acknowledge that the biggest source of this misogyny comes from those who practice the Muslim faith….. as for the rest… well they are probably Anglicans, Lutherans and Presbyterians….. ROFL

Carter is a former Southern Baptist–he blasts them out of bitterness, IMHO. He left the Southern Baptist denomination a while back because they weren’t liberal enough for him.

Several years ago he and Clinton were working on the start of a new group: “new kind of Baptist entity will fight poverty, global warming and war.” No surprise there, huh? It’s still around under but I have no idea if it has accomplished anything.

President Obama and company (Pelosi, Reid, and including dear Jimmy) seem bent on spreading division among Americans. They throw out every insult and slur and the mainstream media heads nod in agreement.

Something odd is up. Civility and rationality have disappeared. Our leaders now apologize for every action our country has taken and blame everyone they can think of (Bush, Christians, Catholics, Republicans, Conservatives, etc, etc) who have now become their scapegoat. It’s as if they want to prosecute and regulate everyone who is not liberal and extreme left.

More and more I’m finding age and memories help me put Carter, Obama, the Left, financial terror, and the rest into historical perspective. Seen this all before in the bad old ’70s.

I wouldn’t entirely blame the phenomenon of female genital mutilation on the Catholic Church, but it’s absolutely a fact that the Church has an awful record of women’s rights abuses throughout history, including things that are actually worse than genital mutilation.

    Jimmy Carter:

As I was serving temporary duty with the Naval Reactors Branch, I stuck closer and closer to the nuclear fuel rods. I saw a purple glow around me. I realized I was seeing god – or possibly the neutrons had gotten to my brain. God told me to quit probing with Rosalynn’s genitals and get into politics.

Hence, I quit the navy and became a Southern Baptist scholar and political peanut farmer.

As I speak with purple haze in my brain to the World Parliament of Religions, I realize that Southern Baptist Catholics suck. Catholics are the reason for my unhappy marriage. They are they are not the light. The light is the purple glow that fills my brain. That is why I gave away the Panama Canal. I am glad they kicked me out of the church because I am more godly than the Pope.

I as I stand here looking at all of you sinners, I would hope that you would warship me and stop distorting my holy scriptures. Just talk to Obama and Barney Frank. Stop the genital mutilation and start the fisting.

As I get older and my mind decays like old nuclear fuel, I would like to smear the Catholic Church and the US military for tossing me out. I am glad I broke the molds of the SR-71 jet so that it will never be built again. Now, it is time for my medications. My limousine is running and I really should quit making a fool of myself.

One last thing before my old ravaged brain forgets, Allah says there is a place for unbelievers like you. In he11!

Let’s see, the Church is against abortions, therefore the selective abortions of females in communist china must be the result of a church that constitutes less than 1 percent of the population of china, rather than the fault of evil chinese communists? What insight Mr. Carter.
I dare Mr. Carter to show a single instance of a fundamentalist Christian genitally mutilating females, and would double dare him to show who the primary genital mutilators are-muslims. As for rape, the same goes on-I dare Carter to show where in Christian doctrine rape is approved for any reason even if one accepted the preposterous idea that Christian doctrine is that women are ‘subordinate’ or ‘inferior’ to men. I double dare Mr. Carter to be truthful and condemn muslims who view it as acceptable behavior to rape infidel women and to stone women who have been raped, because there weren’t four witnesses to prove that the out of marriage rape wasn’t consensual. Indeed I dare him to condemn non consensual (rape) sex in muslim marriages, which is also an enshrined islamic custom. Also please show the Christian church doctrines approving of spousal battery, and I double dare Mr. Carter to quote the Quran and Hadiths which mandate spousal battery against ‘errant’ wives and honor killings against daughters. Mr. Carter is the most duplicitous insane incompetent President we’ve ever narrowly escaped from (Mr. Obama seemingly intends to outdo Mr. Carter though). His continued activities are a blot on himself, as he has not only made himself a laughingstock, but he has also supported regimes and dictators who routinely practice those evils which Mr. Carter apparently condemns. …………………

Oh, the Catholic/Protestant heritage has promoted what? It’s pagan cultures that sell their daughters as brides, women are counted as property, along with the sheep, cattle and furniture. Polygamous societies allow a man many wives, demeaning their God-given status as a full partner – one man – one wife – so they are demoted to add-ons, never to be partners.

And the Church which counsels love man to love his wife as himself, for out of man God made woman, so she is of man’s own flesh. In God’s eyes, if a man abuses his wife he abuses his own flesh.
No other religion lays down anywhere near this confirmation that men are to treat women justly as fully partners in their humanity.

The Church has raised woman out of second class society, not the other way around. Go confirm today how much worth today’s non-Christian societies assign their girls and women. Wake up call.
It’s not by accident Christianity caught on fast with women, and that women were the first to be honored by being the first to have seen the Risen Christ, and one of the first comments the Christ made was to rebuke the men for not believing the women.
    Hardly putting women down.
Modern media spends it’s time demeaning women and girls, inticing them to pole dance at age 8, thongs at age 10, butt tattoos at age 14 … where’s the popular culture valuing women for anything besides strip joint employment?
By this backwards reasoning, Letterman gets a free pass for drolling and slobbering over his slandering against a young girl to hurt her mother, and the “Church” is blamed. No.
Letterman is the anti-Church, what the Church DOESN’T do, and he and his ilk are totally responsible for their own, self-produced degeneracy, degeneracy which always includes demeaning women.

    …………………….
This reminded me of this helpful sanity-preserver:
    Rule of churches:
All churches are a mix of:
    1) small group of committed Christians
    2) larger group of nominal Christians
    3) all the rest are happy pagans.

Usually we don’t find out what we’ve got until BAD happens, then we see people’s true spiritual characters when they are under pressure.

Just because people go to church doesn’t mean they’ve had any spiritual awakening. Carter went to church because that’s what everyone did. From the way he’s lived his life, it may have gone into his ears, but it’s pretty obvious his spirit wasn’t interested. Simple as that.

wanumba, it also says in the Bible (Old Testament) that it’s okay to sell a daughter into slavery to a bordering country. The church didn’t always teach the equality of women. There was a time that it’s views of women were more like that of the Old Testament (women as property) than that of Jesus’ teachings (women as equals). The church is coming around (slowly, over centuries with most progress for women in the last century) that’s true. But it doesn’t do any of us any good to deny the past, especially taking into consideration that our laws are based on Judeo-Christian teachings. (For example, did you know that up until a couple of centuries ago, raping a woman was considered a crime against her father or husband, not against her? That’s because she was property of her father until she married and became property of her husband. For that same reason, she couldn’t own property; how can property own property of its own?)

I’m not implying that secular humanism has been any better to women; it hasn’t. It’s only imprisoned women in other ways. And while the secular world keeps adding chains and shackles to women, the church progresses in the other direction: removing chains and shackles.

(By “the church,” I’m not speaking specifically of the Catholic church, as in the Church. More of Christianity in general.)

Jesus told us to love thy neighbor as thyself. Women are neighbors too.

If Jimmie pulled a turd out of his cheek and told the world he kept it there to avoid the Christians, would anyone be surprised? Not me. As far as his presidency went, I bought my first house when Carter was president and paid a handsome 16% interest on it. The mortgage was $600 a month for a run-down church built in 1895 that we paid $47,000 for. Taxes and insurance were included in the monthly payment but you get the gist of it when minimum wage at the time was only $4.25 per hour I think. Oh yeah, Jimmie’s administration was just ducky.

This is a dead thread, probably a waste to post here. But I wanted to add that the Christian faith does posit very noble and high truths regarding all types of relationships. That being the reason I chose it as my faith.

However, I was speaking from my experience, not from my faith or my ideals.

Since i was a small child I have been the recipient of unseemly behavior on the part of the male gender. I have been assaulted repeatedly, molested, starved, driven from my home- twice, once as a five year old child in company of my beautiful and intelligent mother, and again shortly after completing a master’s degree and with 6 children in tow I was forced to move to an exceeding rural area where I found no opportunity to practice the profession I had trained for due to the remoteness of the location, which was the only place I could find to rent a place for 7 after my spouse, who had a great job, stopped working long enough to foreclose the house and cause us to live on bread and water for a year. Oh and potatoes. No kidding. Then my ‘Christian’ brother, seeing my distress found it a perfect opportunity to steal my inheritance.

I love Muslim women and I would support their cause with everything I have, because in my experience with American men and American courts, we have a lot in common.

Please forgive the lengthy and personal nature of the comment. But ideals are only worth the ink they are writ with if they are lived out.

Christianity teaches that people, male and female are fallen and sinful, totally capable of doing all sorts of mischief. It is only when the man or woman accepts Christ that the spirit of God transforms him or her.

As I wrote above, just because someone claims to be “Christian” doesn’t mean they are. “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
You think anyone who took advantage of you in any way will be accepted by God? No.

Come on you guys ! It’s true. The church was one of the main promoters of the idea that women are second class citizens.”

No it wasn’t! Read your Hesiod. Read Confucius. Study enough history and you will learn that being a “second class citizen” would actually have been a step up for women in many pre-Christian societies. Life sucked for women in any pre-industrial society but it sucked a lot less where Christianity was dominent.

“It has been transferred to the general culture and men do feel justified in treating women as lesser beings.”

And listen to a Shania Twain song and you will find that many women feel justified in treating men as lesser beings. But Christianity is hardly responsible for that piece of bigotry either. :P

“You haven’t been paying attention much lately. Do you think Sarah Palin is the object of such scorn simply because she’s smart or conservative.”

Scorn or merely belligerent fear because she remains a threat to Mr. Obama’s chances of re-election? o_O

In any case the answer is “Most certainly!”. And if you had the dubious pleasure of reading Barbara Brotman from the Chicago Tribune or any of a number of other feminist writers in 2008 you would know that a number of secular feminists were in the forefront of this and served their role as geisha girls for the Democrat Party quite well in that regard. As you yourself point out one must try to uphold ideals rather than merely profess them.
