Another one bites the dust.

Bye Bye Bayh

Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana announced this morning that he will retire and not seek re-election this year. Former Senator Dan Coats (R-IN) announced last week that he would challenge Bayh this year.

FOX News reported:

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh will not seek re-election this year, Fox News has learned.

The two-term Indiana senator is known as a moderate Democrat. His retirement gives Republicans yet another opportunity to pick up a seat in a year when several incumbent Democrats are considered vulnerable.

Former GOP Sen. Dan Coats had been planning to challenge Bayh in November.

The Campaign Spot reported that the filing deadline to run for federal office in the Hoosier State is tomorrow or Friday.

This could be very interesting…Bayh is a young man, too young to bow out of politics.

Me thinks perhaps a high level postion in the O’Bummer Administration or perhaps Biden will be dumped and Bayh selected to replace him?

He tends to lean center-right and could be a move by the Admin to give further balance (appeal to the blue-Dogs) to the ticket???

Very astute observation, my friend…and quite possible, given the polls which indicate that incumbents are in serious trouble come November.

It’s a way for Bayh to escape the November guillotine and live to fight again, at a higher level.

Bayh is not a smart guy, but a shrewd one. Coats is a much older fellow, if he and Bayh get into a mudfest he says, “Owell, back to retirement’ Bayh still has at least 15 years left.

What mud? Bayhs wife is a lobbyist (that was the attack being prepared on Coats) and his ‘residence’ in a lower income 800+ sq foot condo complex in Indiana (as opposed to his multi million dollar mansion in DC). These are just off the wires, who knows what the RNC has on him.

Shrewd move Evan and I agree, look for him to pop up in Dear Leaders Admin first opening that comes up.

Bayh to challenge Obama in 12? Hillary will quit before Obama’s first term is over to perhaps run against Obama? What we might be seeing is a civil war in the Dem party between Libs and Moderates.

One of the reasons we have had very few Dem Presidents in the last half of the 20th Century is that this country fears Liberals. They talk the talk but when it come to governing they break the bank with big solutions to small problems. So no matter who wins the Dem Party’s Civil war — people will be leery of this mob.

    jennyNo Gravatar
    February 15th, 2010 | 10:16 am | #17

The Dems have shot themselves in both feet and the head. There are many independents and moderate republicans who have sworn to never vote for another Democrat again, incumbent or otherwise. They have shown themselves to be untrustworthy liars. Broken political promises is one thing, but they’ve turned it into an art form. The radical left wing has destroyed the democratic party.

Bayh has been outspoken against Obama’s lurch to the left recently. Which isn’t really fair, since Pelosi and Reid are running things while puppet-in-chief Obama takes the heat.

At any rate, I think there’s a chance Bayh might be planning to run against Obama in 2012 Democratic primary.

    Steve WhiteNo Gravatar
    February 15th, 2010 | 10:22 am | #21

Evan Bayh always underperformed in his Senate elections. He won but he always had people wondering why the races were as close as they were, since the Pubs generally had a stiff opposing him.

Coats isn’t Pence but Coats was a decent Senator in his time, and his advantage today is that he can point to that time and say, “look, the country wasn’t so messed up when =I= was Senator.” That’s a good argument for the fall of 2010.

Bayh has money, a good family, a nice house in DC, and lots of friends. He was never really a Hoosier and doesn’t particularly need to be one anymore. He’s had a good run and he gets to be called ‘Senator’ for the rest of his life.

He’ll turn up. He’ll do the board thing. Perhaps he’ll be an ambassador. Perhaps he’ll get a Cabinet position — Bambi can appoint him to something to show that he “returning to the center”.

Better to walk away now than get trounced in November. There’s a lot of that going around.

This is what scares me: Bayh may have realized that in the coming two years, he will need a higher income level than that of a US Senator.

Seriously, politicians need the ego stroke, it’s their crack, life has no meaning without it. I expect to see a Presidential Committee formed soon. And yes, Obama has destroyed the Progressive Wing of the Democrat Party.

    (1) Doesn’t it seem that Bayh’s retirement makes it more likely that Obamacare could pass? W/ all these Dems retiring and no longer needing to face the ‘folks’ back home, they can vote to please the Pelosi/Reid/Obama leadership. Then in January 2011 they will get a nice cushy placement as a lobbyist or in the Dem establishment.
(2)Could’ Bayh’s retirement make it more likely that the Democrats hold this seat, ala Dodd’s retirement from Connecticut?

Bayh had troubling poll numbers but figured he could weather the storm against a weak challenger. Coats isn’t weak, so Bayh folded.

Obama can replace Biden if he wants to (Truman was a replacement for Wallace) but it won’t make any difference. 2012 will be a referendum on the incumbent.

If Bayh doesn’t think he can win his home state in 2010, he won’t be any use to Obama in 2012, and he’s not a strong enough candidate to challenge a sitting president from his own party. He’s also not liberal enough to win even one primary.

There’s no master plan. He just doesn’t think he can beat Dan Coats.

Perhaps Sen Bayh has now learned about the One-Term Obama Plan(tanycyte.wordpress.com).

Since Bayh is not fully committed to The Cause(see paragraph 4 in “The One-Term Obama Plan,”) he can depart now then possibly return in 2014 or 2016.

Marlin Stutzman is the best conservative for this seat. The GOP establishment is backing Dan Coates, a former lobbyist. Coates is exactly what we don’t need- a big gov’t RINO (ab)using the GOP name. John Hostettler is my 2nd choice, but he couldn’t beat a Democrat in a R+8 district.

I encourage people to donate to his campaign:

I live in Indiana, born and raised here. My mom and I were talking just the other night about how Bayh didn’t have a snowballs chance in Hades of being re-elected. Coates however, is a RINO of the lowest order. I much prefer John Hostetler, former REAL conservative US Congressman. This is turning into a route before election day is even here. Dem incumbents are finally realizing how hated and despised they are, and the Party knows they have a better chance of holding a seat with an unknown that people don’t despise than with the elite in office now. People won’t be fooled though, they are aware the newbie Dems will just be puppets of Reid and Pelosi.

To those gleefully claiming that Bayh’s bye-bye is further proof that the Democrat Party has “destroyed” itself, is “toast,” etc.: Don’t let your satisfaction at this well-deserved turn in the their fortunes cause you to take your eyes off the road. Not that you’re doing that, necessarily, and I join you in celebrating what’s going on. Just a word of caution.

We all know Jefferson’s mighty words, but they’re worth repeating at a time like this: “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” And that applies whichever party is in power.

Not 100% sure on the campaign cash issue, but if I recall it can only be spent on political activity. Sounds like a limit but in practice its not; what politician is going to kill their own retirement slush fund by going after that of another pol? Plus its easy to mask; the campaign just pays Bayh a huge consultant fee for his work on politics, no matter how little or relevant that work might be. So Bayh might see it better to keep the $12 mil rather than risk raising less than what he’d spend in a competitive campaign.

    lyleNo Gravatar
    February 15th, 2010 | 11:20 am | #50

    Swift Boater,

That used to be true, but changed prior to the 94 elections, causing a lot of Democrats to retire while they could still keep their campaign cash. It was one component of the Republican landslide. There may, of course, be loopholes.

Bayh’s retirement continues a domino effect. With every Democrat who retires, a GOP takeover becomes more likely, and that causes even more Democrats to retire.

He has been so far. He has been unwilling to have staff answer phone calls prior to important votes, and often does not return mail or email. On the occasion he does bother to reply, it is a generic reply that shows he(or whoever) obviously did not read the argument presented, just put it in a stack of FOR or AGAINST and sent the standard form email back. The generic email states he is weighing the issues and has not decided. Two days before the vote and when he has already been interviewed on TV supporting the vote.

    So yeah he’s that type.

He reportedly blames partisan gridlock for his decision. In other words, the GOP didn’t cave to the biggest theft of wealth in American history. Actually, Bayh himself didn’t want to follow the platitude-spouting blowhard over the cliff.

Acorn must have a weak presence in IN.
These liberal cowards, they are running like rats. Stand up and be accounted for by the will of the people. Even McCain, who I hope gets dumped will try for reelection.
BTW… Bayh looks like John Edward’s illegitimate brother.

    Speaking of nearby trolls…
Most illiterate trolls are Dem nebbishes trying to hasten O’Bummer’s destruction of America from the confines of a mother’s basement.
    That is “settled science.”
Now that their plan is collapsing along with Pelosi’s cosmetic surgery, their trolls grow ever more unfamiliar with the English language.

I concur with bg – Avery is no troll.

English is not everyone’s first language.

Among those for whom it is, mastery of it is not everyone’s first priority in life. The spread of internet access, a wonderful thing, has given us welldiggers and attorneys, farmers and scientists, renters and landlords, laborers and philosophers. If you do have a mastery of the language, or membership in MENSA, you should be able to figure out all but the most cryptic posts.

An extremely arrogant assumption was made, in my opinion, regarding avery’s post.

Susan Bayh, the Senator’s wife has received over $1,000,000 in compensation from Wellpoint, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield company. If one remembers Evan Bayh’s threat to filibuster the with the Republicans if the public option was included in the Senate health care bill it might appear that the Senator was bought and that would have been an issue in the election. Could we call him a Blue Cross Dog Democrat?

Avery has always managed to get his point across.

My mother was from Italy and spoke broken English. She always managed to get her point across. And How! But she was very sensitive of her shortcomings and avoided numerous social functions because of it. Some people were not kind.

So, Avery, good for you! Keep plugging away.

Whoever is or is not a troll, let’s not make it a PC crime to respect the English (that is, American) language enough to use it correctly.

Senator Mikulski of Maryland to Retire

I’ve just heard from an impeccable source that Barbara Mikulski, the Democratic Senator who is up for reelection this November, will choose to retire. Mrs. Mikulski is expected to make her formal announcement in the next few days.

Help get dem fringe candidate on senate ballot in Indiana and have dems be stuck with ehr as only candidate and then they can’t hand pick someone which was bayh and indiana dems plan for waiting so long.

Indiana voters can download a placement for candidates here http://www.bloomingtononline.net/directory/docs/413.pdf

Bayh waited so late so top gop opponents like pence and the indiana sec of state couldn’t get the petitions.

Bayh waited so late to avoid a dem primary and they could pick their favorite candidate. This also helps house dems from having a free for all in the primary and facing multiple exits.

The way to get dems back is to get petitions for a little known dem.

She has until Friday to get the petitions needed 500 for each district but she would really need 800 to be safe.

She is a left wing fringe candidate. Dems tried to game the system and not have a dem primary and leave the gop with a wounded coats and no pence.

    This is only fair.

Make the state dems have to go through the process of kicking her off the ballot.

This candidate is completely fringe and wants to run on a platform about sexism. Bayh and the indiana state dems waited until the last minute but lets make it that he didn’t wait long enough. If she gets on the ballot there is no vacancy to pick their best candidate and they would have to go through a process to get her off or she could be the nominee.

Please let the dems be stuck with her as their senate candidate in Indiana.
