Rep. Xavier Becerra (D – CA) laughs out loud when someone suggests that they start off their SEIU meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Representative and his Purple People Beater supporters got a kick out of that.
Via Free Republic.
From the video: Congressman Xavier Becerra (D – CA) Laughs When Someone from Ari David for Congress Suggests Opening an Immigration Rally With The Pledge of Allegiance. Becerra is the one in the dark suit seated on stage. Not until the congressman is specifically confronted does he and the CHIRLA/SEIU rally leader agree that not to do so would be a massive fault. However, you can see the natural inclination was to dismiss the suggestion. (Date 2-19-10, location is the Los Angeles SEIU offices)

Priceless!
And it was charming to see the audience got right up and recited it with without any grumbles and quite a bit of enthusiasm.

Frankly, for us Germans and Austrians the Pledge of Allegiance is a very strange thing. Even for me, who is one of those evil nazi people who’re pro-American and pro-Israel.
But even in my case this is certainly a result of, now, 60 years of “loving your country is bad” education. We must not be patriotic, we must not be proud of our countries, because of what happened long before we were born.
It wasn’t so bad in my case (though, my mother did drag me to some peace march when I was a kid, she’s not like that anymore as some of her statements of how criminal foreigners could exit the plane for returing home above the Mediterranean clearly show), but today? Dear god. When you look at all those anti-fascist and communist protests in Germany and Austria, most of those people screaming against American “imperialism” (whatever that’s supposed to be) are younger than me in their late 10s and early 20s.
Socialist brainwashing, goose stepping against that they consider to be wrong. Fascists, all of them.
Ignazio Silone put it straight: The new fascism won’t say “I’m fascism”, it will say “I’m anti-fascism”.
That said, I think Xavier Becerra deserves living in a true socialist country, or in Brussels or the UK. Then he could enjoy the fruits of his politics. Really, such people like him… I usually wish stalinism on their asses. Cause they wouldn’t make it very long in a truly socialist system. Something like that would quickly make them reconsider their ideologies.

The pledge is totally symbolic. It has no legal standing. It’s a symbol of your patriotism if you choose to (it’s not compulsory, anywhere) recite it.
Clearly, these people initially thought it was absurd to state it, then realized this was an video ambush and attempted to quickly do some damage control.

Congressman Keith Ellison (D -MN)
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

What I find interesting are the selection of flags on the stage… I see a Mexican flag, though at least the US flag is placed forward, and not among the rest of the flags.
I’m personally torn about the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s become a very important part of the fabric of our nation, to our national pride. That said, it has a progressive past. Francis Bellamy, the author of the Pledge was a christian socialist… get that? Socialist.
Pledging loyalty to our nation is good. But, what’re we really reciting and why was it written? Not only that, what were the original intentions of the author? Perhaps we need to think a little more about just what our Pledge means, not what we think it means.
Is the Constitution a living document open to changing interpretation over time? Is the Pledge a living oath, open to changing interpretation over time?
http://oldtimeislands.org/pledge/pledge.htm
I posit that neither liberals or conservatives realize what they’re looking at and reciting or choosing not to recite – even ridiculing – as concerns the Pledge.

I think it was zombie, a few years ago, related the story of going into a Progressive bookstore, noted for carrying “banned” and controversial books of all sorts. Asked if they had a book by Oriana Falacci, the young neocommie at the counter said something like, “No, we don’t carry books by fascists.”
If the clerk only knew who this woman was, and what she fought against. Their brainwashers do, their profs, but they don’t, not these che-loving kids. They don’t have a clue.

I would be conflicted about the Pledge, if not for the “under God” that was added. That makes it okay, in my estimation. I wouldn’t want the State taking precedence over God.
“One vessel, unsinkable….with lifeboats, and shuffleboard, for all….”
I believe that whoever put “under God” in the Pledge should have omitted the comma after “God”.
“One nation, under God indivisible, with….”
It’s actually true without the comma, IYKWIM.

Kind of par for the course; after all, most of our elected officials are only in it for the money.
February 22nd, 2010 | 12:15 pm | #13
You are correct Taqiyyotomist (remove religious Islamic lying eh?!).
The Knights of Columbus brought pressure to bear to change/amend the Pledge to include, “under God”.
Bellamy was or would have been unhappy with its inclusion. And, considering that the Pledge is not law, it does not fall into the same realm as the Constitution, a dead document.
Still, oaths are a serious issue, and the Lord does not take them lightly. Let your yes be yes and your no be no.

February 22nd, 2010 | 12:48 pm | #15
So…who wrote The Pledge …and why did he write it? What was his political affiliation?
(It’s a pledge to a republic – a pledge to a nation-state. It is not a pledge to The Constitution of that republic. There’s a substantial difference, and learning who wrote The Pledge and why reveals a part of the reason for that. It also reveals why certain Democrats and progressives laugh about it.)
‘One nation, indivisible,’ actually presupposes the end of states rights and accepts the support of big government for the sake of big government.
…and who was the pres when it was ‘officially recognized’ as the national pledge? I thought that conservatives actually disliked that man? which is yet another reason why some democrats and progressives laugh about the pledge of allegiance…
February 22nd, 2010 | 12:58 pm | #16
I suspect Warren, the real reason that many Democrats and liberals laugh at the Pledge has less to do with the reality of its past and moreso to do with its current enshrinement in American pride and nationalism.
Considering that most liberals hate the traditional national pride of America, hate a lot of what the US stands for, it stands to reason then that they hate the Pledge and what it has become rather than for which it stands…
It is certainly possible that many Dems and libs know the truth of the Pledge’s past and thus find the irony of its honor among conservatives worthy of laughter, but I think that presumes that the majority of libs and Dems are as well versed in their history and beliefs as those like Obama and Clinton are.

February 22nd, 2010 | 1:36 pm | #21
Or –
I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, and to the Constitution of the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, unified with life and liberty for all.
The flag is a tangible symbol. I’ll pledge allegiance to the idea and reality that is our nation, not a flag. Inserting the Constitution clarifies the Republic nature of our nation and by replacing indivisible with unified, you reiterate and point out the concept of states and their rights within the structure of the federal government. Insert life to recall the Declaration of Independence. Remove justice because it’s understood, but also it’s a focus of social justice, a socialistic, progressive goal. For the same reason the inclusion of equality was not done because the focus of equality – often to the negation of liberty – is a primarily progressive objective. 100 % equality is a progressive utopian goal. There will always be inequality, especially when there is an effort for liberty/freedom.
February 22nd, 2010 | 1:37 pm | #22
Re the pledge, Francis Bellamy wrote it in the late 1800s for some sort of Boy Scout gathering. He considered himself to be a Christian Socialist, meaning he was a socialist who believed in God. “Under God” was added to the pledge during the Eisenhower administration.

Two things-
One- Mexicans do not think America is their home. Their home is Mexico. Their job location is here. They have no loyalty as shown by their retreat back to Mexico when the recession fell on us. They are more than happy to take the free stuff, live cheaply and send billions back to their home country (which taxes the transfer).
Two- And this is important to know. A good number of Mexicans believe it is their right and their destiny to re-populate the SW U.S. due to the fact that they believe we stole the land from them over a century ago. (Actually we fought for it and took it, but it is a difference without a distinction.) They are quite open about their desires. They really don’t think Tx, or California or New Mexico or Arizona is actually part of the U.S.
Frankly, in California’s case, they may be right. It belongs to a special place we call OZ.
February 22nd, 2010 | 5:34 pm | #36
You all need to go online to “Democratic Socialists of America” party. These people portray themselves as Democrats and have been elected to the U.S. House and Senate as a result. I have no idea how many California state representatives are Socialists. They need to be voted out of office as soon as possible. They are not true Democrats, only portraying themselves as such. The Democratic party needs to be cleansed. Socialism leads to communism and I do not believe any of us wants to become Russia or China.
We have always pledged as residents of any state in the United States to “hang” together to defeat lawlessness and protect our mutual liberties and justice. In no way have we given away our rights as states to the federal government as suggested above; we have merely pledged to stay together to accomplish our end goals of freedom and liberty.

These are not immigrants. These are invaders.
And, these invaders’ aiders and abettors (including the coalition for abortion, gay marriage, and socialism, i.e., the democrat party and USCCB) are America-hating traitors.
#17: Col. West is the best! I think he is the outstanding leader that got hounded out of the army because he took action to save his soldiers’ lives that the politically correct brass hats didn’t approve. As father of an infantryman, I love this man and pray there are others like him.

That gentleman leading the Pledge has fortitude and courage. I’m sure he didn’t make many friends in that gathering that evening.
We should strive to have that same courage and determination in public. Stand up for Freedom and the Republic, don’t worry about being perfect. G-d doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
Best regards, Peter Warner.

In 1982, at the Music City 420 NASCAR Race in Nashville Tennesee, I slapped the hat from a mans head that would not remove it during the National Anthem. I am a little older and wiser now, but I still am deeply angered by those who mock the traditions of a Country that they have no problem stealing from, but would never defend. Really Really Angered.

I wish that Constitution-defending patriots would wise up to the following problem concerning the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge, written by a Christian socialist, was arguably intended to indoctrinate school children to make them favor a big federal government. This is evidenced by the words “one nation,” and “indivisible,” which essentially sweep the idea of state sovereignty under the carpet.
Regarding making a proper distinction between the federal and state governments, Thomas Jefferson put it this way.
“Our citizens have wisely formed themselves into one nation as to others and several States as among themselves. To the united nation belong our external and mutual relations; to each State, severally, the care of our persons, our property, our reputation and religious freedom.” –Thomas Jefferson: To Rhode Island Assembly, 1801. ME 10:262 http://tinyurl.com/onx4j
So the Pledge unthinkingly promotes how the Founders preferred for foreigners to think about the United States, IMO.
Again, the Pledge wrongly glosses over the constitutionally enumerated principle of state sovereignty.
