Hey, times are tough. You gotta pick up odd jobs every now and then.
The Bingo protesters sang “We Shall Overcome” as they marched to the state capitol.

Jesse Jackson led a march of 200 protesters singing “We Shall Overcome” as they protested for Bingo rights in Alabama.
AL.com reported, via Free Republic.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson led a march of about 200 people down Dexter Avenue to the Alabama Capitol to rally supporting bingo jobs in the state.
Jackson said the bingo debate ongoing in Alabama is a voting rights issue and a matter of economic justice. Counties voted for bingo, Jackson said, and the vote should be respected.
“We demand jobs and justice and voting rights,” Jackson said on the steps of the Alabama Capitol.
Jackson said before the march that when a person loses a job, it doesn’t just hurt that person’s household.
“It’s like an economic earthquake that affects a lot of people from the grocery store to the cleaners to the car shop,” Jackson said.
Rally leaders evoked Civil Rights era imagery during the march.Marchers sang, “We shall overcome” and the demonstration paused to pray in front of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, the church once led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

This may seem a superficial or trifling issue, but you would be surprised at how much cash bingo produces. My parish ran games for decades. It also provides a nice opportunity for socializing to a part of our community. When the state bans this they are usually shoving aside decent folks trying to have a little fun in order to make a grab at the proceeds either by lottery or state run casinos.
If I may offer the Rev a bit of advice from the Alinsky playbook, I’d add the “Bingo was his Namo” song to the repertoire.

What a complete and total waste of time, oxygen, and internet space. This clod has proven the phrase “jump the shark”. He obviously did that a very, very long time ago if this is what his “PUSH” coalition is pulled out of mothballs to organize and lead.
I wonder what the next “big” event will be for his flock of bloated sheeple?
Maybe he will organize a right for vending machines that serve preheated cans of bacon drippings to be installed in grade schools. Then, one of his sons could get the distribution rights through all his steamrolling local leaders and banks.
Then after that, he will be a guest star on “Fantasy Island, Redux”.

Actually, this is not about bingo–as in a bunch of geriatrics sitting around a church social hall with cards and markers. In Alabama, “bingo” is a code word for slot machines. Charity bingo is technically allowed by the State constitution, but “bingo” operators, with the help of out of state gambling interests and a compliant Atty. Genl., have built “bingo halls” that are actually casinos with row upon row of slot machines. The legislation the Alabama gambling cartel (and now Jesse Jackson) are pushing for would essentially give the cartel an oligopoly on existing gambling operations and prevent market entry to anyone else. The governor is pushing back hard against the cartel and (fellow GOPer) the Atty Genl. on this. It is getting very ugly, to say the least.

You can see the tiny crowd walking behind him in the picture. These are the same people when an anti-gambling rally was held a week ago that shouted down the governor and other speakers.

I’m glad to see a couple of other folks posting that this isn’t about the classic church fellowship hall bingo social, but about slot machines. Unfortunately, the “civil rights” folks are neck deep in this. The Birmingham mayor, Langford, just got convicted for a number of questionable activities, not the least of which was a “miraculous” jackpot win at an Alabama gambling establishment.
It would seem that Jesse Jackson and Mr. Langford have forgotten why MLK did what he did. They have forgotten what the dream he had was about. They have decided to ride MLK’s coat-tails in order to bilk the black community, and everyone else they can, of their money. It’s selfish greed, pure and simple.
These are the same folks who keep pushing for a state lottery. As one comedian put it, “a lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.” This would apply to bingo (slot) machines as well.

Retribution is the greatest lie…
It may build crowds, and firm-up followers; but just as the Democrats used divisional politics to secure the Black vote for decades… They now discard them for NEW groups, who will eventually suffer the same fate…
Distorted history will finally truth out… Their healing will walk the line of equality, and not (in fact) fear equality.
God bless them if they will walk away from Jessie Jackson, and others that pin them down… And join us in saving our Nation.

Years ago Don Siegalman was elected governor (you know, the one who is in jail now for corruption or some such thing) because he promised legal gambling. Oddly enough, soon after his election a referendum to legalize gambling was defeated. Big surprise to everyone. Evidently the folks who failed to vote in the election were more enthusiastic (con) about the referendum. Gambling is illegal in Alabama. Electronic bingo is slot machines. There can be no other word for it. This is just another effort on the part of democrats to overturn the will of the people.
