It would seem that there are those, of the Progressive persuasion, that would love to force you and yours into the Mandatory Service of the Federal Government.
Last year this demand for “National Service” was announced in February when President Obama called on Congress to pass a “Bi-Partisan” Service Bill:
The Democratic Congress’s answer to President Obama’s Call was to create the GIVE Act which would set up:
“a commission to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”
But through Bloggers, like Jim Hoft, the public was informed of the “mandatory” draconian measure. Which in turn caused such an outcry from the American Public that it ensured that the Law, which eventually passed, did not have any suggestion of “mandatory” service.
You would think that after the obvious opposition from the American people to Mandatory Service, that the Politicians in Washington would get the hint and let the matter drop.
But then again we have to remember who we are talking about…
According to an Article in the World Net Daily, Democrat Charlie Rangel has introduced the Universal National Service Act or H.R. 5741.
When Rangel introduced the Bill to the Floor on July 15th he stated:
“I have introduced legislation to reinstate the draft and to make it permanent during time of war. It is HR 5741, and what this does is to make everyone between the ages of 18 and 42 – whether they’re men or women, whether they’re straight or gay – to have the opportunity to defend this great country whenever the president truly believes that our national security is threatened.
“What troubles me most about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is the total indifference to the suffering and loss of life among our brave young soldiers on the battlefield,” Rep. Rangel said. “The reason is that so few families have a stake in the war which is being fought by other people’s children.
“The test for Congress, particularly for those members who support the war, is to require all who enjoy the benefits of our democracy to contribute to the defense of the country. All of America’s children should share the risk of being placed in harm’s way. ”
If this Bill were to become law it would create:
- A national service obligation – either military or civilian – for every citizen and permanent resident, male and female, of the U.S., aged 18 to 42.
- Persons may be inducted to perform military service only if a declaration of war is in effect, or if the president declares a national emergency necessitating the induction of persons to perform military service and immediately informs Congress of the reasons for the declaration.
- Defines “national service” as either military or civilian service as defined by the president that promotes national or homeland security.
- Gives the president the authority to establish the numbers of persons to be selected for military service and the means of selection.
- Requires those not selected for military service to perform their national service obligation in a civilian capacity for a period of two years.
- Directs the president to prescribe the regulations necessary to carry out the act.
- Deferments for education are only permitted through completion of high school, to a maximum age of 20.
- Deferments may be made for physical or mental disability, or under claims of conscientious objector.
What is truly disturbing is if you are not eligible for Military Service you will be Drafted into a Civilian Corps for a minimum of 2 years. Your”Job” in this Civil Corp will then be defined by President Obama. The bill even allows the President to decide who will be selected and how it will be done.
So if the President decided that he wanted to Draft.. oh lets say..All Tea Party members and Conservative Bloggers, then he could, no questions asked.
Now what could possibly go wrong with that…?
The Bill has been referred to the House Armed Services’ Subcommittee on Military Personnel and, if they follow the Progressive Playbook, will be shoved into a 3,000 page Funding Bill for the troops that no one reads.
I understand that there are those who think a “Mandatory Service” would be good for building character and unity among the American People. But just remember this…
When Bush created the Patriot Act many of us applauded the loss of our rights for the sake of what we perceived as Security.
But the danger in the Patriot Act, or this mandatory service bill, is what happens when someone gets into power you no longer agree with? That “Security” or “Mandatory Service” now becomes something to be feared instead of applauded.
As Benjamin Franklin Once Said:
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
I have a feeling that Rep Rangel’s motivations have little to do with protecting Liberty, enhancing Security, or making it “Fair” by forcing all of us to have a “Stake in the War.”
Most likely its about Control.

Well, the best example we’ve seen of a civilian ‘security’ force is the two gentlemen providing ‘security’ at a Philadelphia polling place during the 2008 elections. So secure did they make those polls that several voters were frightened away. Note also that the US Justice Department is doing its best to protect those pilot paramilitaries from the punishment they rightly deserve.
Remember also, that Obama’s campaign promises for a ‘civilian’ security force included funding at parity with the US military. This current bill would give the President arbitrary discretion over the staff levels of this ‘security’ force, and the funding thereof.
In other words, Obama is hoping to create a personal palace guard loyal to himself, and this is just the bill to enable that Pretorian proposal. And Eric Holder’s ‘Justice’ department is ready and willing to make it a tribal enclave, hostile to any race-neutral concepts of liberty and justice for all.
Out with it, and the administration with it.

Brilliant idea ! The UK already does this. Once you graduate from high school, you serve the country for 2 years, then you continue on with your life. Our close friends from Scotland both have successful careers which started from what they learned serving in the Navy. He’s an Elec. Engineer and she’s an RN. Learn how to conduct yourself like an adult, and get over being a spoiled self-serving brat that your parents raised you to be.

Simple solution; constitutional amendment which ties eligibility for Congressional service to the same age group. And do not allow congressional service to be an exemption.

If I remember correctly, the draft is one thing that most people vehemently reject. Why would the Dems bring it up now? What would be their motivation to do this prior to the election? As currently constituted, I think we can trust the military. I do not believe that they would violate their oath to support and defend the Constitution. We have the biggest army in the world and it is all-voluntary. Our armed forces are more highly educated than ever before. The whole liberal fantasy of masses of poor, uneducated young people joining the army out of desperation is laughable. And if Charlie Rangel is worried about the “utter unconcern” for our armed forces, he is projecting. It’s the Democrats (and many Republicans) in office who are unconcerned. The majority of Americans are VERY concerned about these wars and the soldiers fighting them.
Drafting people for any kind of service? Is he out of his mind?? Wait, no need to answer that.

I think I see the problem. Why stop at two years? I mean once you’ve got your indentured servants and slaves working your plantation; what is your incentive to let them go at the end of their term?
Good to know we’re bringing back indentured servitude though; although I’m not sure why we’re not attaching it to debt again. I guess making everyone an indentured servant is more “fair”.

I have many relatives in the UK.. not ONE of them have had to serve in mandatory service of any kind, military or other – not one!
That is a completely wrong statement that this is the case in the UK and we should follow that lead.
I think this draft issue is sticking the tiger in the eye.. looking for a reaction.
These fallen politicians know their goose is cooked and want the people to lash out at them – not by voting them out, but using force instead of reason.
If they can do that, they can declare marshal law and seize power “for the good of the people” and to deal with the “rebellion” they are intentionally trying to incite. This is the most likely strategy behind their foolish policy here.
Unless they are too foolish for words, which is also another possibility..
Either way, the solution is to vote them out of power come November.

A few thoughts on how they will push this:
1) Disaster Preparedness.
I was expecting a push like this during the first days of the Deepwater Horizon oil leak. If there is another large-scale disaster, look for Obama to start suggesting that the National Guard simply doesn’t have the people or resources they need to cope with a tragedy of this scale, and that they will need to “draft” civilians for cleanup and recovery efforts. The rhetoric will probably be something along the lines of “pull together in this time of crisis to help our fellow citizens recover,” with heavy Christian overtones.
2) Budgetary Shortfalls in State/Local Governments:
In states like New York and California, tax receipts are falling, and an increasingly large quantity of police, firefighters, teachers and park and street cleaners being laid off. These states have racked-up so much debt that there is a real possibility of bankruptcy. When the government cannot afford to pay cops, firefighters, teachers, parks and recreation employees, street sweepers, garbage men, etc. things are going to get very messy. People will demand that something be done, and I expect that this will be one of the options. The rhetoric will focus on “helping to beautify, protect and educate your local community.” Expect a few high-profile park cleanup projects, with plenty of before and after pictures. There will probably be some graffiti cleanup, infrastructure repair duty, to woo the unconvinced that this amounts to nothing more than young people finally “giving something back to” or “taking pride in” their communities.
A side note: Police training here is likely to make a lot of people nervous, so it will be sold as something else. A few possibilities are “take back the night” style patrols, escorts to patrol routes to school, election monitors to prevent intimidation (all recruited from the Black Panthers and ACORN, of course,) and possibly school security in “disadvantaged” neighborhoods. It will, of course, get MUCH bigger than that.
3) An Adjunct to National Health Care:
European countries that mandate service tend to use draftees to change bedpans in nursing homes. As the American Health Care system collapses towards total socialism, I would expect mandated candy-striping, once again sold on Christian justifications.
(A note about things being sold on “Christian” grounds: I draw a big separation between a policy being sold on those grounds, and actually being a “Christian” policy. Mandatory service that requires you go out and serve the poor is not doing good works, it is having a gun put to your head to demand you do something. Doing it voluntarily is the Christian thing.)

4) Military Overstretch:
This will follow the WWII/FDR pattern, claiming that we need more troops to prosecute our new wars that are bound to crop up when Obama needs to get re-elected, probably in Pakistan, Iran or North Korea. Once the draft starts, it will be easy to expand it to use those who are not able to fight to be used elsewhere. It will also not simply disappear once the immediate crisis ends.
